DDMWorks Short Throw Shifter
« on: August 14, 2014, 02:02:29 PM »
This is a little project we have had on the back burner for a little bit and finally finished up. As some of you know JPM had a shorter shifter that bolted onto the stock shift mechanism and made the shifter physically shorter, but did not change the pivot and create a true short shifter. What we wanted to do is actually create a shorter throw on the shifter, while still being able to use the stock shifter ball and boot, or any of JPM's shifter boots and shift balls.

To create a true short shifter for the AR-5 manual was a little tricky because of the way the stock shifter works, but we came up with a way that will bolt right into the stock transmission without any modifications to it. Once installed our new short shifter actually decreases the front to back and side to side movement required to shift gears. I will get some video and also some measurements so everyone knows how much shorter. Pricing for the kit will be less than $200.

The first prototypes showed up today and fit in our test transmission like a glove. We will be testing it out on our little tester later today :)

Well played.

Dave, are the parts made from aluminum and do you have any concerns with wear over time?

The 2 main inserts are made from steel and the production pieces will be black oxide coated. The main shifter portion is stainless steel, so not worried about wear too much.

So, I have a question. I have the JPM shifter because I needed to change the knob to something more comfortable. But in doing so, the shifter rattles more because the stock weight damper isn't there anymore.

Will this change that in any way?

A heavier shift knob will fix the rattle. I gutted my stock shifter and the rattling drove me crazy. I purchased a 400 gram Razo shift knob and no more rattles. I've seen 600 gram shift knobs by TWM Performance but they are expensive. Razo's are around $60.

Very nice machining. I look forward to a description of the installation method using the stock ball and boot.

The shifter isn't bad on the Kappas - if you want an example of one that is much too long, look at the Fiero.  One of the first mods I did on that car.

I'll be interested in hearing exactly what this does for shift feel.

We have test fit the prototypes and they fit great. We are going to be offering up the other prototype to another tester to confirm fitment on another car and also get some feedback on install, then production will begin. Once we begin production we typically get the parts back in 2-3 weeks.

Right now, we will not have a shift ball option ourselves, since the stock shift knob bolts right up without a problem. We will make an adapter in the future to allow other shift knobs though, but no time table on that right now.

This thing is sexy. Critter- order one for Shiny. Don't tell her what it is. Just ask for a video of her using it. Then post that video on utube. Just for kicks, send a few batteries with the package. For no reason.

Huh. I have an MGW knob that I love. Very comfortable and looks similar to the auto shifter. Maybe I need to look around and see if there's a similar knob that's heavier.

EDIT: looked at TWM, and none of those look close to as comfortable... I'll keep searching

I have the JPM shifter with the heavier knob and love it but still interested how this turns out.
