I have the JPM shifter with the heavier knob and love it but still interested how this turns out.

I actually tested this out today also. We have a couple cars here with the JPM shifter on them, so I tried them on our car. It felt pretty good with them, I liked the ball that one of them had instead of the stock shift knob. Bolted right up though, just like it should :)

I dunno, I paid good money for the JPM one.  Yes, it rattles but like it much better than OEM.

Though I would be interested in knowing how much shorter the throws will be; 10, 20, 25%?

Also be interested in someone offering an auto shifter that look like a manual shifter.

This is  IN ADDITION to the JPM one.  It does not replace it.  Rather, it replaces yet more of the stock shifter bits (that the JPM one did not).

So the JPM shifter can be turned into a JPM short throw shifter?

Yes, already tested it and it works great.

are you just asking about a different look? Or a short throw to a throw that isn't thrown since it's an auto?
I think your question went over my head

This is pretty cool.  The JPM kit was pimping, now add the real mechanics to it and it will be a roll of the wrist to blast through gears.

Does it move the pivot point up, or actually make the shifter shorter (move the knob down)? If so, by how much. I like the position of the knob I have now.

Thanks

The short throw shifter does not move the shift knob up or down, it moves the pivot point up.

I'm talking about making an auto shift handle made to look more like a manual shifter. JPM used to make a short auto shifter, I'd like to see it taken a step farther with a shift boot made to cover the shift indicator plate. It would work as an auto but have the looks of a manual.  Our 06 is a manual, and our 09 is an auto.

Dave: I'm tentatively in for group buy if one is offered.

GJ said he sent the unit to you, you are going to have to take it up with him ;) I would send you the test unit that is in my car, but after driving it for awhile, then driving the other cars we have here without it, I don't think the prototype is coming out of my car :)

Dave, will this help smooth out the shifting of the AR5?  My JPM shifter gives me more of a direct feeling of shifting, but it didn't change how rough the AR5 has always shifted.

Have to admit I giggled a bit here.  I know the DDM Dave has 'magic hands' (just ask Ivy!), but there are limits. :)  After all, he's not changing the internals of the transmission.

But let's stop a moment (hah!) and go back to elementary school physics and the theory of levers.  A lever applies 'mechanical advantage' such that the long end moves the short end by amplifying the applied force at the expense of distance of movement.  With a 'short throw' shifter, you have to make the short end longer, and so are effectively moving the pivot point on the lever to make the long end relatively shorter.  Thus, the long end doesn't move as much as it did before to shift gears, but at the expense of increased force needing to be applied to shift.  Thus, it's likely that the gearbox will feel even more 'clunky' and 'notchy' with a short shifter, rather than less so.

Yeap, simple physics. I love the short shifter now that I have had it on for awhile.

Also, the new short shifter is officially up on the website for ordering. We anticipate that the production batch will be here next Friday or the following Monday. We ordered up a bunch of these and were able to get the price down to $165 for the entire kit, but if you pre-order this weekend you will save an extra 10% off of that - $148.50  :yay:

ORDERED!! Woot, woot!

So, Dave, I looked at the installation instructs...  Is there a way to get the factory rubber boot off first, so you don't have to cut it?

Not easily, there is a ring that is riveted down that holds down the sides of the factory rubber boot. You could do it though by removing the entire plastic around the shifter, then drilling out the rivets, removing the rubber, installing the kit, riveting the rubber back down and then installing back the plastic.

Same thing, all of the cars have the same rubber boot in them with the metal ring. Once I do another install here I am going to post up another picture of the boot after install, the next time it will be cleaner, I was honestly a little excited and quick to install that one on our test car ;)
