Sorry, but I agree with Bill.

You never have to say you are sorry about that, TS!

Critter - I was surprised that you took my post to be disparaging.  I was simply relating that I had seen reports by customers that observed an issue.  From the subsequent posts that seems to have been confirmed.  I certainly have no animus toward JPM.

I love my JPM shifter, but yeah it rattles, but not enough for me to want to go back to OEM.

Tomato, did you do a write up of the fix?  What is mastic?

To get this tread back on track I'll probably order a short shifter in the future.

Tomato, did you do a write up of the fix?  What is mastic?
No, sorry, no writeup.

I use mastic as a generic term, but I it looked up for you and was surprised to find:

Quote
mas·tic

/ˈmastik/
noun
noun: mastic; plural noun: mastics; noun: mastic tree; plural noun: mastic trees

1. an aromatic gum or resin exuded from the bark of a Mediterranean tree, used in making varnish and chewing gum and as a flavoring.

2. the bushy evergreen Mediterranean tree of the cashew family that yields mastic and has aromatic leaves and fruit, closely related to the pistachio.
Who knew?

So then I looked in Wikipedia:

Quote
- Mastic (plant resin)
 - Mastic asphalt, or asphalt, is a sticky, black and highly viscous liquid
 - Mastic cold porcelain
 - Mastic, high-grade construction adhesive commonly used to bond ceiling, wall, and floor tiles, plywood panels, concrete, asphalt, leather and fabric.
 - Mastic, waterproof, putty-like paste used in building as a joint-sealer or filler
 - Stone mastic asphalt, deformation resistant, durable surfacing material
I would mean something like #2 or #5.  Anything that's pliable and sticky :)

There.  Aren't you glad you asked?

Installed the shifter last night took a couple of hours because I masked off the counsel and put old towels everywhere so I would not get grease anywhere (an OCD thing) .Install went pretty easy as the directions are easy to follow as usual I did use an Exacto knife to cut out the old rubber boot took my time and got a nice clean cut can't wait to try this thing out !   :drive:

I installed the short shifter today. Took me several hours mostly due to having a hard time getting the ball bearing piece off the end. I had to call Dave twice (thanks Dave) I managed to lose the spring on top of the white piece somewhere between my bench and the car. Used a magnet but no luck. Dave said not having the spring should not be an issue. The other thing that took forever was to drop the shifter into the hole. After about and hour of unsuccessful attempts I put in two screws to hold the metal piece in place and went right in after that. Its a very different feel for me. Its nice but 5th and reverse I need to get used to. All in all love it!

The shifter stays the same it's the shifting pattern that changes

The shifter stays the same it's the shifting pattern that changes

With the new DDM shifter, the pattern stays the same, but the distance that the shift knob moves is shorter, both back to front and side to side.

The DDM mod moves the pivot point of the shifter which makes everything above the pivot point move a shorter distance, and everything below the pivot point move a greater distance than before the mod.

I installed my short shift kit yesterday, but instead of cutting the rubber boot, I "followed the road less-travelled" and drilled out the rivets and removed (and replaced) the boot entirely.

One side note here, not in DDM's short-shift kit instructions, is which way to install the new "ball holder" piece.  It has pins protruding that are nearer one edge than the other.  You need to put it in with the pins nearer the bottom (transmission side).  Of course I did it the other way first and bent the top plate tightening it down - then had to flatten it again.  Arggh!

Anyway, the "not cutting the boot" method wasn't particularly difficult, certainly not to remove it, but let me first state that I was replacing my 'boomerang' with a painted one, so I had the dash out while I was doing this.  I would guess that keeping the boomerang in place would make the access a bit more difficult.

Took some photos so you can see what's involved...

This first one shows the rubber boot (with boomerang removed) - dash is at the top.  Note I have the JPM shift rod, so this is still in place.  If you have the factory shifter still, you'll need to remove it before this step. The rubber boot is held down with a metal surround plate, attached with 5 rivets (green arrows), 4 of which are reasonably accessible. The rearmost fifth one is much more difficult to reach, being tucked under the metal surround. Ignore the wires at the left, those are my additions - for the seat heaters.  UIPDATE: I forgot to mention that I have the Santana cupholder.  If you have the factory one, you may need to pop that out too, to get to the top right rivet(?)

This is a photo of that difficult one at the back:

I drilled them all out - using a 3/16" drill bit.  The fifth one was still drill-able, but at an angle, and I had to chisel the remains of it off with a flat screwdriver:

Then this is what you see after the boot is removed - at this point you can continue with the shifter replacement:

Finally this is the whole process done, new shifter and boot replaced. I was going to use 1/2" long #14 sheet metal screws to reattach the boot  (which I think would work) but a phone call with Joe led me to remember I'd inherited an large riveter kit from my Father in Law that included a few 3/16"-barrel rivets -  Yay!  - so I used those.  Note I couldn't get in to that last one and ended up leaving it open.  But the four other rivets seem to hold it down pretty tightly:

Good luck!

I suspect that your method will also reduce the slight increase in noise that gets through the slit boot.

Too bad they don't still make exploding aircraft rivets, you could have gotten that last one with no problems.

Those were always fun to use on the F-14. There were areas on that jet that those type of rivets were the only ones you could use to fasten pieces together.

I installed my DDM short throw shifter yesterday. Great new feel to shifter and very noticeable. A little hard to get used to at first because I wasn't sure at times if I had shifted into the correct gear and the throw distance being less. I'm going to go back into my shifter later to seal up the rubber boot with some black 3M 4200 adhesive sealant.

They actually had a powder charge like a .22 shell and you would drop them in the hole take a torch and heat them up.  The powder would go off and expand the back side of the rivet.

In the last months I had increasing issues with a rattling noise from my DDM-JPM Combo, even though I did replace the knob for a stainless steel ball.

Are there any other steps to take in order to solve the issue?
