2016 Miata Reveal
« on: September 03, 2014, 09:48:15 PM »
For those that missed it and care (2 of us here). Mazda just showed off the 4th generation of Miata with a Live reveal.

Pics of the new car are posted on Mazda's site - MAzda.com

As a long time Miata owner, so far in pics, the design doesn't do much for me. The interior looks to have some nice seats though.

It's almost sexy. No where near Ivy sexy, just to be clear, but almost Jag sexy.
I'd still take Ivy over a Miata.

I don't like it. The headlights seem small and the side mirrors are huge! Not overall crazy about the body of the car either. The last gen was nice although I'd never own a Miata.

Looks very BMW Z3-like in profile.  But I like it better than the current design.  Interesting, there's a lot of space in front of the engine...

Not doing for me either Dave.
My taste is on something else. I even thought the Jaguar F look good until I saw one (convertible) in person, was not impressed either.

Cry foul Kelu!  They shaved the humps off the Solstice!

(But I was right about it looking like a BMW... Z3 *or* Z4

Read an old interview on Hi Performance Pontiac yesterday with John Heinricy where he talked about working on an engine for the Solstice coupe with 315 ponies.  He said "...we were experimenting with a 315hp Ecotec turbo for the Solstice coupe".  Go figure . . .

Anyone actually check to make sure that wasn't some randome number GJ pulled out of his shorts?

I can't believe you even thought for a second it was true

I't got a little non-turbo 4-banger.  Less power than an NA Kappa, but a fair bit lighter.  There is talk of a turbo next year, though still not as powerful as a GXP/RL, in stock form.

From: http://jalopnik.com/these-are-the-first-official-specs-of-the-2016-mazda-mi-1630375801

Also interesting is the Skyactiv-G engine. We in America get a 2.0 liter Skyactiv-G with 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. You can find that engine in a CX-5, for instance. It is entirely possible that the ND Miata will have a different spec for its engine, however.

All this and the already confirmed 100+ kilo drop in weight. That puts the 2016 Miata in the neighborhood of 2200 lbs, or right around 1,000 kg. This, as Mazda claims, is not all down to switching out a bunch of steel for aluminum. Presumably many other, smaller reductions combined to drop the total weight.

Its still a pretty good weight to power ratio.

And that leaves it open to aftermarket upgrades

If it performs the same as my now sold 2.0 CX5, it will be a dog.....
You really had to punch it to get any good response out of it.
Now that in contrast to the 2.0 in with a little less horse power in the Crosstech Subaru that just slings forward pretty quickly.
