Install of High-flow CAT
« on: September 05, 2014, 10:04:23 AM »
Another upgrade I want to do is a high-flow CAT.  Not decided whos to use yet, but I am wondering what the steps are and can I do this myself with minimal tools?  I live in an apartment, but have a garage to work in (albeit small - but it is a garage).  Is it as easy as removing bolts, removing old CAT, installing new CAT?

I also live in Charlotte and would consider having it installed locally.  Is there a good local shop that anyone here knows of that would do the work?

Thanks - roxer

The install is not that bad, just make sure to spray all of the nuts with a good penetrating oil the day before, or atleast a couple hours before you attempt to loosen them all. You need a 10mm socket and wrench to get the heat shield off, then a 22mm wrench to remove the O2 sensor (or O2 socket), a 15mm socket for the 4 nuts holding the downpipe to the turbo with a combination of socket extensions to get to them all, also a 15mm ratchet wrench can be handy. Then down on the bottom you will need a 15mm socket to get the exhaust nuts off and if I remember there is a 13mm that is holding on the bracket that holds the bottom of the catalytic converter. Lastly, the 15mm socket will be used to remove the passenger side motor mount nut from under the car. Once those are all out, jack the passenger side of the engine up a little bit and the catalytic converter will come out the bottom of the car. You have to rotate and lower the cat at the same time in kinda a corkscrew motion to get it out (this will make sense when you do it). Then reverse the procedure and you will be good to go. When you start the car up, it is going to smoke a lot until all of the oils are burned off on the exhaust, this is normal. I might be forgetting something as we do these in our sleep practically anymore ;)

Also, we are not that far from you, probably about 2 hours depending on where you are in Charlotte.

Hope that helps,
Dave

Only one more thing, when you tighten the new pipe to the exhaust housing, make sure the nuts don't hit the weld on the pipe to flange. Mine hit on both bottom nuts. I had to grind a little bit of the weld back or the nuts will pull uneven.

I had a lot of help from a friend named Jim.  And that probably was the most sleep I got the entire time I was there.  That was a fun trip!

SOLO CAT should be here today. I will install this weekend. After reading Billablehours posts, I think this will go in with minimum problems and I have excellent videos to go by - only 26k miles on the car.  Fingers crossed.

Got the car on ramps and started on the upper part of the original CAT.  Everything is  turning easily. This will be simpler than I thought. I did the liquid wrench thingy. Not sure how you guys get under the car with it on ramps (Rhino Ramps).  I'm going to have to put it on jack stands to get enough clearance to work under there. Finish it up tomorrow when I can get a little sun shine.

It was a little tight sliding under the front lip but once under there you can do it on the ramps. Do you have a creeper?  That helps. Since I have not had to use my jack stands on the car yet I'm not sure just how much better it will be for you.   I was most concerned about whether I had enough room for the cat coming out the bottom and it wasn't a problem. I did spray some PB Blaster on all the fasteners the night before just for ease of removal.  Good luck. You will like the sound and little bump in umph you will get.

I painted my spare engine cover and charge tubes last weekend. They came out great. That will be my tomorrow install project. No sliding around under the car. Yea.

Front on rhino ramps and rear on jack stands gave me plenty of clearance for a full exhaust swap including the solo HFC.

Trying it from the side is very limiting. I've got everything loosened. Now to try and get it out. Loving this. :)

I couldn't get under the side.  Had to slide in from the front. Keep the faith.
