Passenger Seat Belt Buckle will not latch
« on: September 10, 2014, 07:33:39 AM »
This is a new one, for me at least. It quit working Sunday, mid Dells pre-run run. The only 'good' thing about the failure, the warning chimes for not buckling up never came on. So it's apparently stuck in the 'latched' position. But it's hard to hit the curves hard when your passenger is an unwilling lawbreaking violator  :drive:

Any ideas before I break out the sockets and ratchets this Saturday to have a better look at it?

Clean out the cookie and donut crumbs from inside the latch?

There is absolutely nothing IN the mechanism, food/coin, that is causing this issue.

The issue is the small 'tab' that latches through the seatbelt male piece does not retract enough to allow it to lock in to place.

BTW....it worked for sometime but when released and attempted to seatbelt myself the tab would not clear allowing it to lock in place.

Poor BoB has never seen Froot Loops, Kenny, well, I know there are Froot Loops in places that'll never be found... That said, what Moms said, it went from working to not working with no reasonable explanation. And other than a few pre-runs, or a one Sol long trip, no one is ever even in the passenger seat (since 2011). I know I've only been in it while cleaning it, and usually I don't buckle in for that

It'll be an interesting project, at this point, before I buy a replacement buckle assembly, I'm going to take out the seat, get up close with the one on there, and if nothing else, steal Kenny's to make BoB passenger legal, if I cannot fix the latch. I'll let y'all know what's up once I know.

Try a little lithium grease. Could just be gummed up?

It didn't seem to be, when you look into it, and press the release button, I could see a metal piece that appeared out of place (not a coin   :D ), that moved when the button was pressed, stayed moved when held down, but enough to not let the latch latch. Probably a good thing we couldn't make it work, otherwise I'd be replacing the expensive side of the seat belt after cutting Kathy out of it

She could just stay in the car. You'd have to bring her food and wine, but think how nice it would be to always have her there. It would be like adding a new stereo, or a new set of cupholders...

I had that happen to me earlier this year.  If it isn't something trapped in the assembly, it will be a broken receiver, in which case you will be shelling out a couple of hundred for a replacement (Crate has a good price).

Pretty easy to change - you can leave the electrical connections on the seat and just unbolt it so you can reach under it and disconnect the receiver electrical plug, and get at the side attachment (large sized Torx).  Had to take the roof off my coupe to lean the seat enough (only time I've ever had it off).

some WD40 to lube it and maybe move it around a bit.  Didn't you say that he was caught with his top down once?

Oh yea, 2-3 times this year alone it got an inside wash. Found the replacement on Gmpartsdirect for a reasonable $$, had the seat out Saturday, forgot where I left the torx bits, so didn't take it off. Will wait till I have the replacement.
