cracked exhaust manifold?
« on: September 10, 2014, 07:35:48 PM »
Long story short, I had too many projects going on around the house to start another, so Pat convinced me to take her GXPsy to the dealer to have the head gasket replaced. Oh, for those of you who don't know, GXPsy is a 2008 GXP auto, 50,000 miles. We're having it done with ARP head studs. All of the progress reports from the dealer have been encouraging until today. They report it has a cracked exhaust manifold. Almost $500 for a new one, which puts this repair waayyy outside our budget. I'm going by tomorrow (Thursday) to look at the one reportedly cracked to confirm. Yes, I know GM Parts Direct has them for $283. If it is actually cracked, what is the potential downside for driving on it until I can afford to get a new one? Are cracked exhaust manifolds common on these motors? Seems like this is the first one I've heard of, so I'm kinda scratching my head over what to do now. Suggestions and input welcome. Thanks.

I guess it depends on how bad and where the crack is.  Do you know how to weld or any good welders?

I don't have much faith in a welded exhaust manifold. It might work, but I doubt it would be a permanent repair. Thanks for the suggestion.

If the crack is on the divider near the outlet then i wouldn't worry about it.

We haven't seen any cracked here before. I know we have one that was used to mock up the tubular header, it would need the studs removed, but I can make you a great deal on that one if you want, give us a call.

Stopped by the dealer early this morning to look at the manifold. Just as Shabby had suggested, the crack was in the center divider. I told the tech to reuse the original manifold. They still have to send it out for one helicoil. I'm not sure why they felt the need to remove the studs, but they did, and one galled the threads. Thank you for your input. Very much appreciated.

Yes, that crack is extremely common I think we have only ever seen one that was not cracked. I thought you meant it was cracked somewhere else.

Yeah.....when they talked to me on the phone to report finding a crack they were all concerned. Wish I had asked then where the crack was. Would have saved a lot of grief and aggravation. Live and learn.

Now I've gotten another call from the dealer. GXPsy is back together and running, but it's running hot....235 - 240, and the cooling system won't hold vacuum. They suspect a cracked block. They were advised by GM Tech Services when they started the repair to fill the block with water and let it sit for two days. After two days the block was still full with no sign of leakage. That, however, was a static test. Today they added a die to the coolant to see if any shows up in the crankcase. The head was pressure thested and is OK. GXPsy has a new thermostat, and they used a vacuum system to fill it with coolant. Any thoughts or ideas out there? I'm really concerned now since this is beginning to nickel and dime us to death. And might still end up as a whole new engine. Talk about an outrageous repair bill. Help!

Really good chance there is air in the system. This is classic air in the system data. Burp burp burp ...

I'm hoping it's trapped air. They seem to have gone to great lengths to avoid an air pocket, though. We'll see.

Unfortunately, the news is as bad as it can get. A dye was added to the coolant, and then they ran the motor. Dye was found in the crankcase. Cracked block. Needs a new motor. arrggghhhh!

Yeah... I was wondering that earlier when you said about the high temps (but what do I know?).

What were the symptoms before all this started, anyway?

Or they ran a long bolt into short bolt thread a broke through to a oil passage.... Dont ask me how I know this can happen!

And I think there is a TSB on porous LNF blocks if it within a VIN range it should be replace free.

The original symptom was coolant in the crankcase. I had suspected a blown head gasket, but the original, when removed was in excellent condition.

Is there anyway for the water pump to leak internally into the oiled side of the pump?
