DDMWorks Oil Cooler/Filter Relocation
« on: September 11, 2014, 10:05:14 AM »
Almost completed on another little project we have been working on. This will offer the ability to install an oil filter relocation and also a oil/air cooler for heavily modified turbo/supercharged cars. We are still about a month out before we will have prototypes here, but thought I would share.

I'm sure if you paid them sufficient money they would saw your block up and paint it green too.

The fact that these cars have canister filters (like all of my old British stuff) means that an adaptor has to be a lot more elaborate than is the case with a spin on.

As for oil cooler, has anyone (Dave?) put an oil temp gauge on a Kappa?  It would be interesting to know what they run at and if the cooling is adequate. They have an alloy block and can radiate fairly well, but then so can my old Lamborghini engine, which is all alloy and yet runs 14 quarts of oil AND an oil cooler that looks big enough to service an earth mover.

In my race cars I always have an oil temp gauge and the only things in the cockpit I pay attention to are rev counter, oil pressure and oil temp, probably in that order.

I admit I am scratching my head a little about where you'd locate an oil cooler if you did need one, but I'm betting that Dave probably has something in mind.

Dave will this be a complete kit or a "relocater ? " and the customer adds a cooler and hardware , also if you do provide the cooler in the kit where will it mount , and any idea of the cost ? cause I'm going to start saving now and thanks again for continuing to make great products for our cars

220 deg. is fine, 260 is worrisome.  Higher is very bad, even with synthetic.

Temp was after autox run,  taken from the ECU output to my dashhawk.   That is the only time I have really looked at it.  I will have to check it again during normal operations.

How would this work on an lnf with an external oil cooler if coolant is still heating/cooling the oil? Are there coolant lines in the back that you can loop to bypass the oil cooler?

The temp will vary depending on where in the engine you have the temp probe.

The best place to locate an oil temp gauge is as close as you can to where the oil is coming out of the sump. If you were using this sort of adaptor (DDM) you'd probably T off the outlet for the temp sender.

Actually you keep the stock oil cooler on the back of the block with the LNF or the 2.4's with it. Since the oil temp typically lags the water temp, an oil cooler will also be able to help maintain coolant temps to some degree since we can take heat out of the cooling system with the oil cooler. Also, when oil temps are higher than the water temp, it will prevent more heat load going into the cooling system.

Okay, had to go for an emission inspection today (DDM's excellent work passed without a hitch) and watched oil temp.   Took about 10 miles, 6 at highway speed before the oil temp caught up with water temp.  After 12a miles on the highway, the oil temp was up to 208, water 197, outside air 74, intake air 75, cat temp 1700.

That is the warmest it got with normal everyday driving.  No high boost throttle input.   Previous temp listed was after the 3rd in a series of autocross runs.  I have the 2.4 w/stock oil cooler with the engine mods listed in my signature

They do still make one, the problem with it is that the inlet return for theirs sticks out to the side, which means that you can not install it on an Ecotec with the stock oil cooler, without removing the stock oil cooler for the install. Even then, the little bump out always seems to clock in a position which makes putting the stock oil cooler back on impossible without building a 1/4" spacer plate to do so. We have had to do this a couple times and it is a real pain to do, since the plate has to have O-ring grooves cut in it for sealing everything up also. Since getting the stock oil cooler off with the engine in the car is not very fun, this basically all has to be done with the engine outside of the engine bay. That is why we are not big fans of the CBM adapter, hope that makes sense.

So I learn something new everyday about these cars being an old school hot rodder I'm used to an oil cooler in the traditional sense a cooling unit mounted somewhere in front .So now I have to ask how efficient can a cooler be that's located  in the back of the engine ?

On my Solstice GXP, which as over 110K.

The new prototypes showed up, they fit perfect, we will be running some more testing on them and let everyone know when they are ready for purchase. We will be offering this as a standalone option for those that want to make their own lines. We will also be offering up a kit that has everything needed for install.
