Solo high flow cat install. No problem
« on: September 11, 2014, 11:31:05 PM »
Well I went ahead and ordered the Solo high flow cat from DDM during their Labor Day sale. Got it the other day while I was out of town and didn't get a chance to install it until this evening. Took about 2 1/2 hours by myself.
This was the first time I have been under the car and after a little research decided Rhino ramps looked easier than using my low profile jack and jack stands. For $39 it was worth it.  A little tight under the car when using my creeper but no problem. I'm sure they will be fine for my Backbone when it arrives also.
Anyway, the cat install went without a hitch. Just like the video and instructions say EXCEPT no need to remove the motor mount bolt and jack up the motor.  Tight but no problem. Just twist it like shown and have a little patience.  My biggest problem is that I tore my left rotator cuff full thickness on the 4th of July and due to prior surgeries on the same shoulder it is inoperable. Hurts pretty good but I'm hoping the other rotator muscles will learn to take over for the separated muscle if I keep using it. Oh well...getting old sucks.
Started her up and the sound is much deeper. A little louder but not obnoxious or ricey. A little smoke as the oils burn off the converter but no leaks. I will give her a run tomorrow and see if I can notice the difference. I have a Trifecta budget tune and I told them I was going to install the cat when I ordered the tune so we will see.  The Trifecta alone was an impressive mod for the money. Hopefully the cat will give her a little more.
I will post the results.

What do you mean?  Is there something the Body control module does that deals with emissions?

Sort of. You can start fresh with fuel trims and a few other items. My method- and use at your own risk- was to disconnect both battery leads and tap them together. It will wipe out any secondary memory in anything. Preset channels, BCM, etc. I've never had a side effect, but again, YMMV.
Other option is pulling fuse ?42?

Anytime I made changes to the engine I would do this and start clean.

Then again, I'm a little crazy. :)

I think you might mean ECM not BCM.

Yes, you mean the ECM.  I did disconnect the battery so the ECM will re-learn but that should not matter. It will re-learn anyway but may just take a few more ignition cycles and time.  The tune I got was with consideration for the higher flow cat.  Thanks

Awesome job.  Looks like I'm gonna do that as well. Good to know about clearing the ECM.

I think you can just pull a fuse and put it back to clear the ECM.  I think it's #45 under the hood

Still wet out darn it.  Will post impressions tomorrow.  She does sound better.  At initial start up while in open loop it is much louder then once she warms up into closed loop sound quiets up a little.  Open loop sounds pretty nasty  :D I like it.

Finally got to go out and play a little.  She runs great and sound better.  I bet she sounds even better on the outside.  It is a little hard to quantify any power gains partially because it is 90 degrees and probably equal humidity.  No codes over about 40 or 50 miles and all is good.

Where can I get the video that "Billable" refers to in his original posting. I think it would be helpful.
Thanks so much for any info that you can provide.

What the video didn't show was loosening the engine mounts and jacking up the motor to allow clearance for removal of the stock CAT (should be prior to second video) and if you have a stock airbox, you must disconnect the breather hose by the turbo to the airbox or you will snap off the plastic tip that it connects to.

Deep.   I did neither of those. I didn't fracture the hose on my stock air box and also had clearance to get the oem cat out.  For what it is worth.

Ya that is not necessary.

The motor mount trick is required about 80% of the time.  If you got it out without- join me in the cool kid club.

Jack: I've had the SOLO Hi - Flo cat since 1997. Never a problem, never a code! I'm not sure what HP increase it gives - I keep saying I'm gonna dyno my car, but not yet. Hope you have as many trouble free miles as I have.

I didn't fracture mine either but I did see one break on another car when the engine was lifted.  This only applies if you jack the engine to remove the cat

Update on Solo cat....as the car's tune is learning the new exhaust flow I can feel the improvement. She seems to have a little more low end grunt and pull a little stronger.  Sounds better also.

Damn.................Senior moment! Of course I meant 2007. In fact SOLO used my car in their "how to" video for the HI FLO Cat You Tube installation.
