Great time to change that water pump with the one you won from the meet, if you haven't yet.
Damn right, as soon I entered the shop and saw the block, first thing which I said to the guys was: Don't forget to change the water pump and thermostat ;)
Showed them also the water pump tool

I'm not sure the tool will be much help with the block already torn down...

Even more weird one :) if I start to hide thier things, both will need a ladder for sure

Indeed the timing chain being out is not too much trouble but the pump is still rotating in the housing.

The assembly didn't start and already faced issues:
1) Timing and balancing chains - reported not being in a great shape:

They were not supposed to bend so much  :idk: found timing chain in Romania, going to reuse balancers chain.

2) Oil pump reported being full of debris ... still searching for a solution
Wonder how come the oil pan has no debris from the failure and oil pump is full of them ... oil pump is supposed not to suck all the debris from the pan, right?

Often times there are pickup screens to filter out the large metal pieces where the oil gets picked up in the pan.  The oil then goes through the pump, the filter, and then the engine.  As pumps wear they can generate their own metal debris.

Those chains look like they can go around a compound corner now.

PS I think Elff had to stand on a chair last time we hid something on him.

I did not have to stand on a chair.
That is a bold faced lie.
I was standing directly on the countertop.

The last time I've seen such a damaged piston has been when I worked for Volkswagon.

The reason for the damage had been poor lubrication.

They called it a kind of piston jamming.

That is very interesting theory, when they started to re-assemble the engine, they discovered the oil pump damaged, the gears had scratches between them and also to the plate where the gears are sitting.
Nobody though to this because I always used Motul 300V oil which is very good oil and even if gets hot it still lubricates very well and ECU didn't reported any issues with oil.

Now the question would be: the oil pump got damaged because of metal pieces which came from the piston failure or the other way around?
