Water pump replacement
« on: December 02, 2014, 09:13:49 PM »
So I noticed my coolant level a little lower than mid bowl three days ago. I've read several of the posts here and elsewhere about water pump failures. So I topped it off a little while ago and will monitor it. No coolant visible, but then...

I noticed several comments on the pumps folks were using, but I want to know specifically about the Bosch 97220. This any worse than the GM version? I have used many Bosch parts in the past and they have always been quality parts. Not to mention its a little cheaper too.  Comments?

What other parts are needed for the replacement? I saw an OTC 6616 water pump holding tool. Anything else? Gaskets maybe? Provided this pump is good to go, I may snag it and have Dave install it for me. I want everything I need just in case it won't make it there.

Only other thing other than the holding tool and the pump you might need is the gasket if the pump doesn't come with it.

I would change the thermostat as well while I have everything open but only use the OEM part.

No one knows about whether the Bosch is better or not, but from a thread on the BB, it doesn't come with all the same parts!

I used the $45 amazon part on the coupe.  No problems.

Got a part number for the GM thermostat?

Did it come with a gasket to mate it to the water pump back half?  From TS's post it seems you have to use the other half of the pump housing.  Is that correct?  Is it necessary to remove the car hood to do the change?

This thermostat?

If so - wow, that's almost as much as the pump!

Yeah that's a crazy price for a thermostat a but as many here will attest, if you use another you'll be changing it again.

Now you gave me ideas, I have a spare new pump won at the meeting raffles
Should I replace it when the engine is rebuild? Should I do thermostat also?

Make sure you drill a SMALL hole in the t-stat prior to installing. Search for more details, but it makes a huge difference when trying to remove air bubbles.

We always replace the water pump and thermostat when doing the engine builds, just a good idea while you have the engine out anyway.

So I snagged the Bosch pump (97220), Fel-pro gasket and GM thermostat (12622410) from Amazon.  I'll take it with me to see Dave when he looks at my whistling problem. Hopefully I don't dump on my way to see him.  That would suck.   :cloud:

Thanks Dave.  I would hate to have to Fred Flintstone it all the way to Powdersville.   :tool:

I'm not a DIYer, and my water pump is going out.  Anyone have a mechanic recommendation for the San Diego area?  Preferably north county?

Thanks!

I got your PM. I'll reply. I am by no means a professional mechanic. I've only done a water pump once or twice  and it was with the good doctor doing most of the effort. My work would come with zero warranty or guarantee of any type and may lead to catastrophic engine failure.

Just thought I'd put that out there.

Also he does a pretty good brakes job, Shiny is still alive, right?  :D
Especially don't go with him in the first test drive after brake job, when brakes are barely working and you have push them hard in order to start working. Don't ask me how I know.

GJ you need to update your warranty to what my friend used to say.
The minute the vehicle leaves your yard, the warranty has expired
