TN Joins NC Bans Big Rigs on Tail of the Dragon 2014
« on: December 08, 2014, 12:40:17 PM »
Autoblog - Noah Joseph

Drivers and riders in Tennessee have one of America's greatest driving roads at their disposal, but soon truckers won't as the state's Department of Transportation is closing the roadway known as the Tail of the Dragon to tractor-trailers.

The highway officially known as US 129 (SR 115), or more commonly as Deals Gap, The Tail of the Dragon, or simply as The Dragon, is an eleven-mile stretch of road in Blount Country, TN, that runs from the North Caroline State Line to Tabcat Bridge. It features over 300 turns that have made it a haven for enthusiasts on two wheels or four, but between 2010 and 2012, there were 204 crashes on that section of road. Six of those involved fatalities, but while only one of those fatalities, according to the statement below, involved a tractor-trailer, "there were a number of incidents involving large trucks."

As a result, the Tennessee DOT is imposing a ban on vehicles over 30 feet long from driving on the Dragon, with signage indicating as such to be installed in mid-January. The decision follows a similar ban enacted across the state line on the same route by the authorities in North Carolina. Head on down below for a few video clips that illustrate just how problematic the issue of trucks on the Dragon has become.

this is great ! now if they will ban cars and only let motorcycles on there, that would be awesome.

The motorcycle riders are just as bad.  I've seen countless ones completely in the wrong lane and I've had to swerve and almost crash because of them.  Then there are the sport bikes who have their wheels in their lane, but their head is over the line.

Properly driven cars pose no issues, just like properly driven motorcycles.

I agree.  It's definitely about time they banned the trucks.  They get stuck in the switchbacks and shut everything down for hours.  I just missed one last time I was on the Dragon.

There is a lot of stupid on the Dragon.  A lot of good drivers doing things right and then a lot of stupid.
