Why do we obscure our license plates/tags in pictures?
« on: March 13, 2015, 07:53:16 PM »
I've always wondered why a lot of people obscure their plates when they post a picture of their cars on the internet, either on a forum or elsewhere.

Here's why you don't have to all the trouble, at least you guys in the states don't. I wonder if there's a similar law here?

I have ALWAYS wondered the same thing.  What do you gain by covering your plate?  If there is some reason for it, then why don't we hide our plates when we drive in public?  Remember, our license plates and VIN numbers are visible by everyone when we go to the market or shopping malls.  It's not like we are giving away our dates of birth, which are available free on the internet, or say our Social Security Numbers. :2c:

I blur out my plate because in many cases it is relatively easy to use a plate to find out someones address and then steal your car or visit you when they know you are on vacation.

Crooks also use the interweb to locate an exact match of a car (model, color, year, et cetera). Then they put a false plate (copy of your plate) on their car and use their car to do illegal stuff.
The Problem is that there are a lot of guys from eastern Europe and Russia, who locate your car by the license plate and steal it. :slap:
I don't  blur out my old cars plate, because they're already gone.

I don't blur out a license plate on any car picture I have posted on many internet sites. Hell, on some forums, my signature lists all of the currently-registered license plates I have on my cars.

I don't blur it out and they can't get the address from the picture of the plate anyway. Did you read the article I linked to?    :D

It has to do with privacy laws etc... The majority of time you see this done is on TV, or when things are been reported.
The news media and any one that is in the business will always do this, to make sure it does not get back to them.

In Germany it's pretty easy to figure out the location of the car.

If you got the whole number, you just call a central insurance agency and tell them that you damaged that car on a parking lot.
Then you tell them that you need to find the owner, because you want to pay for the damage.
Bang, they'll give you everything you need to locate the car.

So our plates are pretty simple,  for example DEL- K 7080.

DEL = City of Delmenhorst
K = current letter used by the motor vehicles registration office in Delmenhorst.
7080 = consecutive number of cars registered under K
In Addition to that every plate has a seal which shows the coat of arms of the state ,in this case the coat of arms of Lower Saxony.

So for someone who wants to steal your car is enough information to know where to call (insurance agency) or to locate the car.

We have a lot of problems in the moment with the guys from Russia.

One word. Ontario.... as you are from there. An address may not be directly provided, but it can easily be gotten indirectly.

With a simple ON plate number anyone can go online or to the MTO and get a UVIP which includes the current owner's name and city of residence. It's pretty easy to get an address from that for many people.

signed on September 13, 1994, by President Bill Clinton, who later remarked that he wished he hadn't signed it because "I never would've hooked up with Monica if I knew she drove a Neon."

LOL, poor Neon gets no respect.

I don't count the numbers, but I get a lot of calls. I even pick up the numbers I don't know.

my battery died once on my phone in Madison wi. I asked the gas station, walgreens, public library, etc.... all of a sudden no one has a phone. I encounter a construction worker that I saw had his phone clipped to his belt. asked to use it. he covered it up, and said he doesn't have a phone thinking I didn't see. I just wanted to get picked up. I called him out on it, and told him to hold the phone out and i'll talk into it. like I said... paranoid. I just wanted to get picked up in a town I didn't know, with people I knew had phones. he did make the call for me.

I guess I stopped in Duluth mn at 1 am to help a girl get her canoe back on her car. maybe i'll pay the price for it someday. until then, i'll let everyone else do my worrying for me.

I find it funny that people who are on facebook hide their license plate.
Facebook is the place to lurk for social engineering.
