Now: Shoe Goo was: GXPsy limped home today or code P0335
« on: May 04, 2015, 05:21:12 PM »
Pat had to drive GXPsy in reduced power mode to get home from work. I read the codes and it came up as: P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit A malfunction.  I erased the code. Is that likely to be an intermittent or one time issue? Or are we looking at something more serious? Help, please.

I cleared the DTC from the computer and Pat drove GXPsy to work. No issuses going to her office. Halfway home it went back into limp mode. Another P0335 code. Has anyone experienced this? What was the remedy? Thanks.

I'm reaching back in the memory banks here, but I think some folks had crank position sensors go bad. New sensor cleared the problem.  Hopefully someone's memory will get jogged.

Rouge since you are an LSM go to the super secret LSM section and download the manuals if you haven't already done so.  The manuals will explain what the code means and how to trouble shoot them, it will at least get you looking in the right place.

I did read that from someone's post on the the other board. Cannot remember who it was, but I do remember seeing that.

I seem to remember a couple posts about this as well.  If my memory is correct I believe that sensor is on the windshield side of the engine vs. the 2 on the front of the valve cover.

elff, you are correct. It's on the driver side, just above and behind (of course) the starter, at the rear of the block. I'm about to dive into the manual now. I was hoping it might have been a common problem, but apparently it is not. So....time to go reading. Thanks for all the input guys. It's appreciated.

If you take off your windshield wipers and the black cowl that is underneath them, you should have much easier access to it.
I do remember reading that once you replace that sensor, it resolves the issue.
So good luck.  Hopefully you have it under control now.

Elff, thanks for the suggestion. I'll check and see. The factory manual was of little help. "Remove the starter, remove the sensor. Replace the sensor, replace the starter." Duh! So, if I have to remove the starter, is it best to work from below? Or above? Has anyone here replaced a starter yet?

I've had mine over a pit a number of times and the starter looks pretty easy to get to from underneath as it is clearly visible.

There is one bolt on the starter that is very difficult to get to, or was that on the bellhousing?

Per Dave at DDM the best course of action is to remove the intake manifold. While the starter is easy to see, it is not so easy to access or remove. Thank you, Dave.

Finally. Almost done. Sort of. Removed the intake manifold and all the "stuff" in the way and was able to access the crankshaft position sensor. The old one has been replaced with a new one. Time to start re-assembly. I probably should have asked this question before now.....is the intake manifold gasket reusable? or, does it need to be replaced? Thanks.

You could probably get away with reusing it but for ~$10, I would replace it if it were mine. http://www.crateenginedepot.com/Ecotec-Intake-Gasket-LNF-12589366-P10891C667.aspx

Agreed. New gasket on order. I have way too much time invested not to use a new gasket.

I finally got GXPsy back together. The reassembly went smoothly and quickly. I had no issues whatever. She fired right up, and so far has not set any codes. That's an awful lot of labor for a $20 part! As part of the process I removed the wheel well liner. That made access to some of the bolts quite a bit easier. While it was out I was able to affect what seems to be an effective way to deal with those nasty liner tears. Hey...I just used affect and effect in the same sentence! OK, I'm back to serious again. Shoe Goo. yep, I said I'm back to serious. Shoe Goo. It's designed to work on a variety of "oily" synthetics. I cleaned the area carefully, especially the edges of the tears, applied Shoe Goo to both sides of the tear, allowed to flash for about two minutes, and then aligned the two halves of the tear, building a film around the outsides of the tear. I let it sit for 24 hours and then re-installed the liner. All of the flexing needed to put the liner in place did not damage the repaired areas. A day later the liner is still fine. Obviously I don't have a long term evaluation yet, but at least there appears to be hope for those of you with torn liners.

Glad you got it all straightened out. As far as the wheelhouse liners, do you have the screws all the way around or did you replace many of them with push pins?

Almost a week later and the Shoe Goo is still holding. Unfortunately, the P0335 code reset for Pat on her way home this evening. Very frustrating. Most of the online sources reference the P0335 as a bad sensor, bad wiring, or bad ECM. Does anybody here know if there are any other factors that could be involved?

Sorry to hear about the code coming back but have a look at the post I made back on 2011. Haven't had any cracking on my wheelhouse liners since the dealership installed my liners this way.

From the repair manual

"An intermittent condition in the camshaft position sensor circuits can cause a CKP DTC to set.  Inspect the CMP sensor, harness connections, and related wiring, if you suspect this condition."

I guess it can't hurt to look at the  camshaft sensor.

Good info on the wheel liner TSB. Thanks.

SA, I will check the cam position sensor as well. I appreciate the tip.
