Sounds like the turbo seal.  Don't forget to have your throttle wide open on the compression test.

Can't fault your analytic path.
Question is how you can check the seals.  Maybe you can't and will have to just replace it, but then you may as well rebuild the whole turbo - seals bearing etc.

It's good he was able to fix it so quick before selling it.  Still would like to know what the problem was.

I cleaned the one way valve and emptied the catch can.

The car has been for sale locally for awhile.
