"not too lightweight" single mass flywheels
« on: January 08, 2016, 04:14:26 AM »
Hey Guys,

do you know, if there are any single mass flywheels available that are NOT lightweight parts?
Preferably a steel flywheel ranging in the same weight "area" as the stock dual mass flywheel.

The intent is to increase reliability without Major shortcuts in the drivability...

I know the SPEC and Fidanza parts, but they range around 1/3 of the stock parts weight and acutally do Change the way the car drives significantly afaik.

Sorry for US folks, I'm typing in metric because Napi is also in metric and easier for both.

Napi: not sure if you tried the lightweight flywheels in our cars but the change is not so extreme as is shown on paper when driving, as you said 3 times lighter than stock. I was surprised the huge difference in mass between stock and SPEC when I replaced mine but is not drastically in daily driving. I upgrade my clutch/flywheel from stock at around 20 000km because of hundreds of drag races and increased torque in my car from 350Nm to 540Nm and over 600Nm on some races.

Even my wife was daily driving the Opel for more than 1 year because it was our only car.

I drove far worse on/off clutches from my friends but indeed wasn't like a normal family car, the only noticeable difference was when starting slowly from a stop especially if it was on a inclined road and a little bit firmer clutch pedal (I presume you will upgrade both).

After another 25 000km I replaced SPEC flywheel + Stage3+ clutch back to stock because my new setup doesn't spike torque as much (400-450Nm) and I found out that I can't fast shift with the SPEC kit and I was loosing precious time during the races.

Thanks for the Input, Kelu!

I considered changing the clutch to the sachs Performance one, it is said to last 420nm of torque without increased wear.

My engine is tuned to 405nm if I remember right, so it may just fit.
I haven`t considered changing to a spec clutch tbh, I heard rumors about it of being not reliable and wearing out in less then 30k miles. (Some Folks in Germany use it with the fidanza flywheel...)

I know Sachs are very well used by my friends especially in VAG cars and they seem to be pretty happy but I have zero information about them in Kappas. There are GTs in Germany with their kits? Or they are thinking to develop one for our cars?

With 405Nm I would stay stock, at least I know the kit works and it can hold 350Nm as stock specs of the engine, I think I put the most stress on our stock clutch (tuned, nitro, bigger turbo, etc with over 200 launches at the races) that's why it started to slip around 17 000 - 20 000km but only in 3rd gear during races when I was pushing maximum nitro and doing 620Nm.

Now with 400-450Nm without torques spikes and not so many races I preferred to return to the stock kit, is daily friendly and no more unknown aspects, if it lasts 25-45 000km I will be very happy.

It is already available.
Either 3000951198 suitable for 400nm
Or 3000951198S for either 420 or 450, I don't remember. :D

By the way:
What's the difference between the SPEC and the Fidanza Flywheel?
