Looking for something I haven't seen done yet
« on: February 25, 2009, 02:28:28 PM »
On the long drive to Kerrville & back I pondered where I could install a radar detector. Didn't want it in the dash, then this idea hit me, and I have not seen anyone come up with what I need. PArdon the cr@ppy 'sketch' that's the best I could do with Paint here @ work  :gaah: I did the compartment in red, only so it would be 'visible'

I envision the enclosure wrapping up the inside and windshield side of the trim, closed at the left and right ends, and more of a blended transition to the stock surround next to each visor. there could be a screened/mesh opening on the windshield side for the detector, either open or possibly a closeable cover for the front side of the detector. the area to the right over to the pass side visor could be an open cubby, for tossing sunglasses, toll transponders, whatever.

Kind of like the attic...which I really like, but your design is more to your needs

YEa, but the attic attaches to the top, I want something that's part of the surround, top up or down, always there.

Got it. Understand in fact one of the things I had to do was change a couple of things out of attic (like my door opener -- little hard to get to with the up down )

 been there, done that.... I tuck smokes up in the rail on the top, my toll thing rides in the same area, and I've stuck sunglasses up there one time, only to remember them *after* the top's down and I'm rolling along. Somehow 3200 miles of cruising over 7 days inspires solutions.

I actually had at home the original A-Pillar trim from the passenger side, and I thought perhaps that would be a good start for a form, but it's not quite right, depth is good, but it's not uniform in dimensions, gets slightly wider at the dash end.  :gaah:

May need to learn to work with either CF or fglass to create something. While I was just sitting here, I thought of how the detector could possibly be concealed. a door that slides up & down, similar to the slide covers some PCs have over the auxilary ports and bays up front.

I was actually pondering the idea with Dave and Randy from DDMWorks of making a gauge pod for that spot...either for a single or double gauge.  Great concept.
