Key fob issue opening trunk
« on: April 17, 2016, 06:02:50 PM »
Neither key fob opes the trunk.  Both were giving me issues with opening the door so I re-soldered them but neither of the fobs trunk release button works?

Button inside the glove box works.

Any suggestions

It could be the contact material between the button and the switch has worn out.  Try putting a bit of aluminum foil between the button and the switch/contact and give it a try to see if that works.

What DaveOC said.  You can just try cleaning the contacts on the circuit board and the rubber membrane first though... that could work.

Funny thing, I had the same issue last week. The issue went away after I manually opened the trunk with the button in the glove box.  :idk: Strange.

Joe,

I took a look in my toolbox and found the new keyfobs.  If you want them let me know, John or Steven can bring them down with them.  If you want them before then let me know and we will figure something out.

I'd just use a crowbar until GM warranty covered the remotes.

The "resoldered them" comment is interesting from a 'what changed' PoV

As you push the buttons the PCB flexes slightly, over time the solder joints can crack.

This is one of the reasons I bought a Tech 2. In owning two GM cars, I've had to reset two radios and three FOBs (not counting the two I lost under GMEPP warranty). To pay a dealer, even at cheaper rates, would have exceeded the cost of the used Tech 2.

Now they're basically water/disposable. If you're keeping a few GM cars of this era, even a knockoff Tech 2 is worth considering... they're falling into a sweet spot in terms of cost, and I think they may head up as GM's successor solution costs per-month to use (plus massive up-front cost for the MDI and Tech 2 passthrough).

The contact material on the membranes can degrade over time. Check Amazon or other online suppliers such as the link on reply 5 by Sly Bob. The membrane can be purchased separately for next to nothing. Change it out and you don't need to program the new fob to the car. I've done that to two of our cars recently (including GXPsy) with no issues whatsoever.

Joe did you ever get yours fixed?  I still have two out sitting on the table if you need them.
