My Shit, it keeps breaking
« on: October 26, 2016, 07:55:39 PM »
Actually not a huge deal, just the price of power.

I had an exhaust leak and it turned out to be a cracked exhaust manifold.
I am a little shocked as that's a beefy part, but it's not unheard of, and I recently did tune the fawk out of the devil.

We are at a minimum going to spot weld the bolts so they can't back out, but I am thinking about welding the DDM T-25 adapter to the exhaust manifold so we only have to worry about the 4 bolts for the turbo.  Otherwise, there are 8 bolts that we have to worry about.

Thoughts?

Maybe a new idea for your turbo kit?

The aircraft tech in me says safety wire.

GJ speed tape is better.

I have safety wire on some of my bolts on my motorcycle, but those are easily accessible.
The thing with safety wire is you need anchor points.
Those lock bolts look cool.

You can wire from one bolt to the next no other anchor points needed.

Stage 8 fasteners are great! I used them on the 4.6L in my Mustang where it basically requires an engine removal just to install the headers. OK I blew up the engine but while I had it out I installed the headers using Stage 8 bolts.

When I get the new manifold, I will take a look at these options
I am still leaning towards welding.
The issue is between the t25 adapter and stock manifold not the turbo to the t25 adapter.

My driveway is kind of stupid steep at the bottom and I have a feeling its that twist that is causing all the issues and actually not normal driving.   The crack, well, that's the price of power!!!

Do you have to change your transmission again ihawk?

That's the plan.  I had the Dr. play with it in Arkansas and he told me the 4th synchros are shot.  I can usually shift the car into 4th once when I first take the car out.  Then it just gets worse from there until it refuses to go.  Downshifting - not allowed...at all.  I've tried to trick it into 3rd and then back down, but no luck.  I have to slow down until I can just skip 4th. Reverse is getting worse too.  I've always had a little trouble getting it into reverse, but it's definitely getting harder to get into reverse.  Soooo....the few times I have driven it since June have all been close to home.  Or I did take it into the Metroparks this weekend where the speed limit is only 30 and I never have to shift it into 4th.  My poor Sol!

Oh and Wartie and I found what looks like leaks from???  You guessed it...the water pump!  The car just turned 90K, so if it is the water pump, I'm not complaining at all!
So yeah...my shit is breaking too!

If it ever got cool out I wonder if the drop in temp would make it shift smoother.

I always used to drill and lockwire fasteners on my race cars, but have used a system like the stage 8 on exhaust bolts.  Just make sure you have enough space to get in there to install/tighten.  One race car we had to work on was so tight that we were short on time and couldn't create a new access panel before the race, so just took an arc welded and tacked the bolt heads to the header.  Lasted quite well until the gasket finally blew out at which point we had to cut the welds.......

Are you thinking it shifts worse as the car warms up?  If you are, then I would say...sometimes.  Today it was 68 degrees when I left the house.  The Caddy was out of gas and I was late so I drove it to work.  No issues the entire way to work.  Took it to lunch today because I had to run across the street to the factory anyway...no go into 4th.  74 degrees.  I haven't driven it since Saturday.  Took it through the metroparks by my house because I knew I wouldn't need to shift out of 3rd.  Hadn't driven it in 2 or 3 weeks prior to that.

Sorry...Kappa drift team taking over Elf's shit!

Yeah the brass synchros might loosen up as they warm up.

It's only supposed to be 49 on Friday.  I'll take it out for fun Friday night and see what it does.

Well, this ended up being more work than expected. Went the route of welding the heads of the bolts due to the fact that space is limited and I don't want this to happen for a 4th time.
Also eliminated the current downpipe due to it not fitting well and the V-clamp not  being the correct size. That was a second source of leakage.  Local shop is custom building a new downpipe with flanges on both sides similar to the Solo Performance HF Cat I had previously.  Will weld a flange back onto my magnaflow cat back, weld the magnaflow exhaust into a single pipe under the sky verse the existing 3 pieces that are connected with clamps and add a flange to the EFR.

All of this should hopefully permantly fix this reoccurring issue.

Or just return it to stock. Probably pretty similar In performance to what you have now
