broken plastic hose fitting
« on: November 07, 2016, 09:01:51 AM »
At one time I recall a lot of posts regarding breakage of the plastic nipple on the air intake tube - the one from the filterbox to the turbo. The plastic nipple where the crankcase vent hose attaches. The one on GXPsy has broken, apparently some time ago, and may be the source of all the lean codes she keeps setting. Are there any good sftermarket solutions to this problem? I really don't want to spend dealer prices for another cheap plastic part. Thanks.

Many have just glued it back on (JB Weld or similar) and reported no issues afterward.  Some have used a brass tube as reinforcement (cut off spent .22 shell for example: http://www.solsticeforum.com/forum/f59/justa-fyi-60248/) but others have not.  Goat even used a plumbing fitting which he screwed into the intake (http://www.kappaperformance.com/forum/index.php/topic,3634.msg45085.html?#msg45085).

I would do the above, but if you REALLY want to spend money, DDM has a replacement silicone intake tube for sale with a permanent metal fitting embedded.

I have the stock intake tube and I also have a K&N Intake.  Both of which I can sell.

Pm me if you are interested in either?

Mine's been broken for ~100,000 miles.  I did the brass tube reinforcement repair with glue , and it held for about a week.  It just sort of loosely slides over the brass tube, and has been that way for years.

I've not experienced any problems with a lean code.

Gentlemen, thank you all for the suggestions and ideas. I'm going to take a day to ponder, since Pat doesn't need GXPsy back on the road quickly (an advantage of owning waayyy too many automotive toys). I'll post as soon as I've decided. Again, thanks.

But Scott, you're not supposed to use Elmer's for this!

Pat has spoken. She wants an OEM part (that is not broken and/or repaired). Elff has made an interesting offer. We'll likely be going that direction.

We've had the replacement part on for several weeks, and so far no codes have been set. I can't explain why that's the case, but it is. A source of filtered air for the crankcase wouldn't seem to have an effect on lean codes and it seems odd that none have been thrown. The scientist in me has a tough time accepting it's "a coincidence." Have I missed something? Enquiring minds want to know!

 :idk:

Only "coincidence" is that (maybe) it has something to do with the MAF sensor...  that only makes sense if you unplugged it and plugged it back in when you swapped these pieces over.

Either way, it's awesome that the codes have gone away!   :tool:

It was drawing in unmetered air through that hole.

Hence the lean code.

As that hole is post maf.

Post MAF makes sense. I should have picked up on that myself. Thanks.
