Manual transmission replace
« on: December 06, 2016, 10:56:43 PM »
Looks like fourth gear is going in the car and I need the transmission replaced. For those who have done it, what's the average time to replace? A local garage gave me nine hours book time. Curious if that's realistic or overkill and I should negotiate that down.

is that to remove the old and replace with another, or to remove the existing, fix it, then reinstall it?

Remove old and replace with new transmission.

I would say pretty close. I've had mine out 3 times and first time it took me 10 hours. But I have a supercharger so about the same as taking the turbo out to remove it.  2nd time it took me 7 and 3rd it took me 5.  But that's after learning all the tricks.

Sounds about right, if I'm not mistaken, the unbolting starts from rear end with diff (after exhaust of course) and there is some tricky bolts like the one from above of the bell housing.

Great, thanks for the info folks!

But that's after learning all the tricks.

Do elaborate. Anything I can give these guys to make this go smoothly would be appreciated.

The stocker is actually pretty stout already.  Unless I'm mistaken, most of Mallet's V8 conversions used the un-modified stock Aisin manual trans.

There's a bolt above the starter. I had to use a series of extensions and swivels and had to go from the front and snake it through the engine compartment above the starter to get that bolt out or you can pull the intake manifold to get to it.  Also for dropping the rear end it was easier to pull both lower ball joints and pull the CV shaft out of both sides rather than just one and wrestling with it. Also if you have a torque arm loosen all the bolts then drop the rear down and pull the rear end with the torque arm attached off the transmission.
