Rotrex owners opinions wanted
« on: December 14, 2017, 08:23:36 PM »
Looking to hear input from any and all Rotrex owners. What is your experience? I'm ready to pull the trigger, but trying to decide between Hahn stage 3 turbo, or the upgraded Rotrex kit from DDM. Your input is greatly appreciated!

a better question would be

How do you want your Kappa to perform.

Do you want more HP but at the expense of no power in the lower rpm range
or
Do you want instant power, that tops out at the higher rpms.

That's basically the difference between a large turbo and super charger

I would rather have low end grunt so a PD S/C would be perfect, but that isn't available anymore.  The Rotrex is similar to a turbo but belt driven instead of exhaust driven, and simpler too.  I'm just wondering if the Rotrex can be tuned to give a bit more power lower down in the rpm range or not.

Do you know where I can get an MP62 kit?  DDM doesn't make them anymore.  Haven't seen anyone selling theirs either.  Do you happen to have a connection??

Yes, that is what Critter has on his.  Don't tease me now.  If you have the hookup on a stage 3 s/c kit, you've got yourself a buyer.  Please tell me you aren't kidding around Mister Kappa Asylum sir!

I installed a Rotrex SC in my wife's BRZ. The power is very linear. Easy to install and maintain, imo. Pulley size changes can easily increase boost. I'm not a fan of turbos, but they do have their merits.

Of course I do that's why I'm bringing GJ along, don't tell him okay?

My hookup would be Dave or Ivy at DDM, have you called DDM and talked with them?  Maybe get Critter to sweet talk Ivy into getting a kit put together for you.

Do we somehow get all the money with this idea?  If not I think my original idea still might be the way to go.

How could he say no to that offer?

GJ if you offer him over 20K you and I get to split the amount over 20K.  So if you offer him 20K +1 we can split the $1 and that's better for us because even $1 is better than nothing.

Ditto on interest on the MP62.  I've looked at the Rotrex but don't care for the fact that you have to be at the top of the rev range for optimum results.  Plus 99% of my Sol driving is done in the city where it seems to make more sense to want instant torque at low RPM rather than high.  Also, I can't remember the price of the MP62 kit, but it sure seems like the Rotrex kit is about 1/3 higher, which is significant to me.  Add in that it might make more sense money wise to sell a 2.4 Kappa and buy a GXP model instead.

Having said that, I bought the 2.4 with the hope that I'd someday go w/a V8 but it looks like I may have to settle for an alternative.  BTW, I don't think it helped that DDM said they were upgrading the MP62 kit for a couple years, and then decided to go w/the Rotrex supercharger instead.  Had people known that at the beginning, I think more MP62 kits would have been sold when they were available.  But I understand that it was probably a business decision on DDM part, and based on the potential of the Slingshot market, and that the Rotrex is smaller and can be located down lower in the Slingshots engine compartment.

Did the DDM MP62 kit propose an intercooler?  Water-to-Air or front mounted?  I guess it depends on where it was proposed to be installed...

Up front intercooler.  I believe that was part of the stage II update, or perhaps the stage III.   Has anyone contacted Dave or Ivy at DDM and asked if they can still get/do the kits?

The DDM MP62 Stage 1 kit did not have an intercooler. Both the Stage 2 and Stage 3 kits had an intercooler in front of the radiator, in the same spot that the intercooler is on the GXP and Redlines.

If you can't get the MP62 SC and you want TQ in the low end, I would suggest going with a KO4 turbo.  It's the perfect size for the engine and will give you good power in the low to mid 2000 rpm range.  It's very cost effective as well

I think DDM already knows there continues to be interest in a positive displacement supercharger considering how long folks have continued to show interest, but the business case might not be there to justify offering it again.  That's why I was wondering if RPM would be interested.  The impression I've been getting via FB, sounds like RPM business is running a lot smoother now than what some people thought about them in the past.

As far as a turbo goes, I'd be looking at Hahn at this point but their turbo prices are higher than the competition, and the feeling I'm getting from reading some of Bill Hahn posts goes rightfully so because of the quality of their turbo kits.
