Not a Kappa ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
« on: August 01, 2018, 12:06:07 AM »
Hi Folks. I've got a 2002 Mazda Miata. I'm in the process of swapping in a rebuilt LE5 (the 2.4 from your cars) with factory forged rods (from 06/07), a Solstice transmission, a LNF turbo manifold and "big wheel" turbo.

I'm here to learn from you all about your experience with this drivetrain. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Works both ways  :D  if you put a full kappa powertrain in the Miata, then it's not a Miata either.  Kappiata? Miappa?

I have a friend who built a similar car for autocross. He is really quick in it. I think I saw where it is for sale.

Yes, it's for sale after Solo Nationals in September. '92 Miata, 2.4 ecotech. He first did supercharger, then changed to turbo.

Cool swap!

What inspired this particular swap?

I was running a DIY turbo before on the stock 1.8. That engine caps out at about 240-250whp before you get rods going through the block. It was also fairly unreliable for track duty. The engine was getting tired and I blew the turbo at the end of a weekend at the track.

I didn't want to just fix it without going bigger, so the most obvious next step was a built 1.8 with pistons, rods, valve springs, oil pump, balancer and some other bits that would have brought the total bill to around $4k. What I feared most is that if I made one small mistake, I could be out $4k. What I like about this patch is I can use a stock block to get to 350whp+ with torque for days, and if I blow the engine I can just get another one for $600. Plus it's got a beautiful torque curve, and the transmission can handle a lot more power than the Miata transmission.
