Stock Clutch/Flywheel Chatter
« on: December 05, 2018, 08:32:30 AM »
Short and sweet:

I had a DDM clutch/flywheel. Disliked 1st gear and the chatter.
Switched back to Stock clutch/flywheel. Chatter increased.
Chatter is consistent with RPM *BUT* goes away when I am turning right???

I have a video to show you all what I mean. Maybe this is a cause of the transmission angle? Would loosening the torque arm and adjusting the trans height potentially make this "chatter" go away?

Thank you,
Johnny

Can you hear the driveline shaking around, as in a low frequency oscillation?    When I did my spec 3 after break in, it would do a low frequency chatter, like large shaking movement (oscillating) when taking off in some situations.  When I modified the transmission mount (fill the void with urethane), it helped significantly to tighten up the driveline and also to arrest any remaining chatter.

I can FEEL the driveline shaking. It shakes at idle no matter if the clutch is pressed in (disengaged) or not. It shakes while im driving (rather aggressive sounds) and the MOST aggressive sound is when I'm on the brakes about to come to a complete stop (about 5mph) the whole car shakes the vibration is so bad.

But as mentioned above, if I am taking a right turn... all is good. no noise whatsoever: like it was from the factory.

Dave at DDM seems to think its a torque spec on the torque arm bolts he thinks this is 100% post transmission driveline related.

Oh crap, whatever I said above doesnt apply if you're running the torque arm.

Quick thinking out loud here:

1) Vibrates at idle, vehicle stopped, clutch out.  Therefore the input shaft into the trans is spinning

2) Vibrates at idle, vehicle stopped, clutch in, gear neutral position. Input shaft into the trans may be spinning, with very low torque

Does it vibrate at idle, vehicle stopped, clutch in, while in 1st gear??  This would stop the input shaft of the trans because being in 1st gear connects it to the non-spinning wheels.  Consider if it vibrates, then it is probably 100% Pre trans driveline related, opposite of what Dave is saying.  I say this because if the input shaft of the transmission is for sure not-spinning, then it is physically impossible for anything after the transmission to vibrate because the stuff is static.

Maybe my logic got flawed here, any ideas on the thought experiment here?

I will try this today if I have time. I'm honestly leaning toward internal damage like an input shaft bearing, sadly.

Absolutely. Unfortunately I think I will be retiring the solstice until Spring. Elff. What's that guy with all the car parts? Maybe I could have Lucifer's wiggle stick deep in my car too.

HossierGXP
and I am terrified about what the hell the wiggle stick could be.

Please remember, Lucifer had an engine transplant and is under new ownership.
