P2188 Code - smell of gas on oil stick
« on: September 11, 2019, 07:24:09 PM »
Been getting this code on my deep for the last year, more prominent on during hot days and in my reading, I did the following steps.
  • Cleaned MAF, cleared code, returned
  • Replaced Fuel cap code returned
  • Cleaned connector on HPFP and code was gone for a few months, could have been the winter.  It's back
Read the post on the solstice forum about The Ghost smelling gas in the oil and pulled my stick today.  Man it smells of gas bad. Looks like I"m pulling the HPFP and going to replace it.https://www.solsticeforum.com/forum/f43/replacement-my-high-pressure-fuel-pump-hpfp-141657/

I did a write up on the HPFP replacement as well.   You could log your car with HPT and see if your fuel pressure is dropping.
I could see that in my runs and sure enough eventually it just died 100%

For you, this will be a super easy task.  Once you take off the windshield wipers and the plastic piece underneath them, the HPFP is in direct view

problem is my laptop crashed thanks to Windows 10, DPC Watchdog Violation after the last major update.  Locks up within seconds even in safemode.

don't have anything to install HPT.  Oil on Dipstick is definitely very thin and reaks of gas

Solstice is parked until the pump comes in.

I looked at those log files, but it looks like your scanner wasn't configured to log the Fuel Rail Pressure or the Desired Fuel Pressure.

To compare, here is a scan of one of my runs

It wasn't. An HPT update wiped my old layouts, we just used the default on. What we considered telling were the fuel trims, and the knock. Should be no KR on a tuned engine, and it running lean would be the most likely explanation for the knock.

Yea, but it would have been great to see the one parameter I was looking for.
I think if you open an older scan, it will at least populate the information you had, which would help you rebuild your chart, graph and layout.

If I remember correctly there is an order you want to do them in and save them so that when you load the layout, it loads the chart and graph information at the same time.

I didn't know you could do that. I've now got my old layout recovered and saved, thanks.

replaced the pump two nights ago and changed the oil.  Pretty easy.  I have about 80 miles on it now and no P2188 code

Compared to all of the other mods you have done, I figured this would be a piece of cake for you.
Glad to hear it fixed the issue.

Mine showed no pressure loss...as a matter of fact, mine was almost perfect, except for the fuel it pushing into the motor.  The only obvious signs I had for my p2188 was back fire during coasting in gear....  the code of course...and an irregular, none-rythmatic tick of the HPFP....  And then of course eventually the gas smell of the oil.  Continue to look for a "pending" code.  Mine would "pend" the p2188 unless I was driving my car to work...then it would set the CEL.  It will pend the code and not set the CEL, but you should notice a bit of reduced performance from that....

Got a pending P0300, P0301-4 yesterday.  Pulled all the plugs,  verified they are 41-108, cleaned and re-gapped to .035. I'll put more miles on it today.

So tell the truth Joe, how many times have you pulled the stick and smelled it since the change of pump?
