Sky Redline Battery Swap Help!!!
« on: February 28, 2020, 01:35:00 PM »
So, I don't trust a dealer (or myself to swap my battery using the fender or the wheel liner technique). I did come accross a post that RickyD made on this thread back in 2009 https://www.skyroadster.com/threads/battery-change-out.33807/#post-470553

Basically he says that his tech just "unbolted the fuse box and lifted the battery out." Now since I need to be in autozone's parking lot and do this fairley quickly...I'm wondering how difficult it is to unbolt the fuse box to lift out of the way to lift the battery out and put the new one in. Am I inviting more problems doing it this way? What all is involved in "unbolting the fuse box to move it out of the way?"

I'm assuming I just need to unbolt the four bolts right? Has anyone done this? Does anyone have a how-to?

Any help would be appreciated as I need this ASAP!

Well, I've not done it that way - never even heard of it.

I would be a bit dubious about how easy it is though.  Apart from unbolting, you'd have to move the thick & stiff wiring loom(s) out the way and risk the strain on the connectors.

Why do you have to do it in the parking lot?  Just buy the battery and take it home.  Swap it and return the core another day.

That's how I would do it too.  R&R the fender is not that big of a deal.

You don't even need to take the Wheel off
It's been a while since I had my Sky, but It was super easy.
Open the hood
Turn the steering all the way so you get as much clearance in the wheel well as possible
and then you remove 5-8 bolts from the fender liner [I believe they are 5/8 but if not, everything else is 10mm  ]
Disconnect the battery terminals and remove battery clamp
Slide it out of the wheel well
Slide new battery in
Attach battery clamp
attach wires to terminal.

I bet there is a video on one of these forums or Youtube that shows someone doing it.

Both methods are easy and there are youtube videos showing both methods. I prefer the fender removal. I just draw around the screws with a magic marker before removing and then it goes back pretty much exactly where it was, then wipe off the marker with a little acetone.

Pretty much exactly? Is that an oxymoron?

There was a retiree, a female that years ago found herself with a Kappa after her husband passed away, the battery was shot. He had a collection of tools that were in the garage but the woman had NO idea how to use them.
We shared suggestions and links to videos for her to look at. She had quotes to change the battery locally for an absolutely ridiculous price.
That was one happy and proud lady when she was able to change the battery all by herself.
Just trying to do my part...
