Is my DIC broken?
« on: February 05, 2021, 10:00:27 PM »
Just posted this on the Sol forum and thought i repost here in the hopes it is something simple:
Hey all, just got back into the game with a low mileage 2008 GXP (21K Miles!).
Got the car delivered a couple days ago and am getting reacquainted. The car horn "chrips" every time i lock the doors with the remote key fob (which is a problem as it is loud and pisses off the neighbors).

So searched the forums and reread the manual and the process to get into the "personalization" menu is not working.
It states to turn the ignition to "on" and then hold down RES and INFO for one second.

Believe me I have tried every variable of the above scenario to no avail, I just can not get into the personalization menu.

Anyone out there ever had this happen? Am I crazy / stupid and I am missing something obvious?
 Is my DIC broken?
(How will I explain that to my wife?) :wife:

Any help is truly appreciated in advance!!!

You are just askin for trouble with a subject like that.  I'll try and behave myself.

I seem to recall you just have to hold the buttons down and while you are holding them the display will flash to the setup screen.  So try just holding them down at exactly the same time for a while longer.  I reserve the right to be wrong though.

Otherwise I have no idea how you are going to explain to you wife that your DICk is broken.  I hear they make a pill for that.

not RES and INFO. the cruise control buttons are not connected to the driver information center. you need to press the RET and INFO buttons. RET = RETURN the button just below the INFO button.

Been posting on the other forum but update after having a weekend to futz about with it..
Pulled Airbag, pulled switch, removed, disassembled, checked for any cracks or breaks in the solder lines on the PCB board, sprayed with contact cleaner, reassembled.
Nothing. In fact everything was spotless and looked brand new. I really got lucky with this car as it is so clean, the part stickers are still on the motor and look brand new as well.Have a new switch ordered and on its way.

PS> Sorry about the mislabeling of the buttons in my post above. Absolutely did the bottom two buttons.
PPS> Tried the pill, that ended up breaking something else. Probably not for this topic :)
PPPS> Getting older now and starting to have respect for all the posts about it being a little rough on the back and getting in and out. Last time i had this car, it's rattles bothered me. This time i have the car and it's my rattles that are bothering me.     :violin:

Did the buttons work when you pressed them individually?

Like was said above, press and hold the two lower buttons, the return arrow and INFO for about 5 seconds with the key to the on position.  Then press INFO to change through the options.

There's something better than Viagra to fix a broken DIC. Imodium...it makes your shit hard.

When I play with my DIC it has a mind of it's own.  Sometimes it doesn't respond to either button; or only 1 of the two buttons scroll through the display types, some key cycles it's the arrow button, other key cycles it's the menu button.

I for one, must say I have learned from the elders here that keeping it clean is an important part of a regularly functioning DIC.

(FWIW I think the new switches were cheaper than the ?blue? pill mentioned above)

So.. I guess I got off easy?

All seriousness aside,  the usual culprit for these button problems, is simply dirty switches.  The switches are of the rubber-membrane type, where they press a conductive pad to bridge PC board traces.  Any dirt changes the resistance and messes with the results.  You can just remove the switch assemblies, pull them apart and clean the contact areas.

My car's left side switches started acting up right after I got it.  I cleaned the switches and it has worked fine ever since (some 11-12+ years now).

TS, You are 1000% correct and it was my hope it was just some dirt (the car is 12 years old after all).
And honestly I enjoy fiddling about. Half the reason i came back to the Sol :)
Nice to discover how easy the airbag removal was and take apart the switches to actually see what you guys had been talking about.
Really this forum and it's members are the other half the reason i came back.
Too much bad stuff going on in the world and messing about with a car and bandying about with you folk is the best kind of distraction. My 6 year old son might even learn something mechanical and (hopefully) get excited by cars like his old man.

Well there was that one time.

I don't remember that.  Therefore it didn't happen.

I seem to recall you saying I was right, probably the only reason I remember.  Too bad I don't recall what I was right about....
