GXP Shocks

I need some advice..... I finally took my GXP in for the recall on the rear seal and asked them to check the shocks.  Last year while I was in St Louis BLK GXP put my car up on his lift to see if he could help straighten the exhaust.  While it was up on the lift he noticed that the shocks were leaking.  I didnt do nothing at that time so when I took it for the seal they inspected the shocks.  The service mgr told me that the pass side did show an ACTIVE leak but the driver side had signs of leaking but at this time was not ACTIVE.  He then told me that GM will replace the pass side under warranty but not the drivers side.  Our warranty is only for ACTIVE leaks.  I told him that I thought that shocks should be replaced in a pair and besides that since our shocks are fluid fill how do they know if it is now empty and that is why it is not ACTIVE.   I told him that I wanted to go ahead and change out in a pair and that I will pay for the driver side shock but I wanted the one they take off.  Ok so they do the work and I am thinking that it shouldnt be much and then they tell me how much and I almost fell over..... 

After this story my question is Was the service mgr correct in that GM will only replace ACTIVE leaks leaving the other shock alone or should both of them be under warranty???????

It is too late to do anything but I want to know just for my own information....  Does anyone have any thoughts..... Did I get taken?

Too late to grap you swim suit. You got hosed. In most cases GM never sees the part that is warrantied. The dealer must hold to parts for 90 days for GM, after which they can toss them. He was a dick.

So after getting hosed as you say is it to late to go over his head?  I have the shock they took off and of course the receipt.  I think it is funny that they charged 1.10 hour to do the warranty and the one I bought took them 1.50 hour..... The dealer here in Frankfort closed and I had to go to Courtesy Pontiac in Lexington.  I was there for 4 hours without a rental just sitting waiting.....  :gaah:   I was not a happy camper....

Waiting for the car is a choice. As for the flat rate charges, the 1.1 hours is what GM pays the dealer per there warranty guidelines. The 1.5 hours is the industry's flat rate. While justifiable, under the circumstances he was a COLLOSAL dick. The fact that he didn't warranty both shocks was a choice he made, because he could have simply stroked a pen and extended the umbrella of a "good will" warranty, and that boat would have floated. Were it me, if it were a credit card I would call the card company and dispute the charge. It would reversed and the credit card company would work to sort it out. At the same time I would call Pontiac customer service and POLITELY raise the roof.

I agree with some of what Bob says above.  Think about it, you know the guy screwed you over, so you won't be going back there right?  So why worry about causing some grief to get what you should have gotten, and that's BOTH shocks covered under warranty.  Call the customer service line, try not to get cranky with them, and they will check into it.  Ask them about replacing 1 shock and how safe that is, and tell them the shock in question was completely dry, how was it supposed to be actively leaking at the time of repair.

Remember, you not going back, so just keep pestering them to try and get some resolution.  I think you'll be surprised that you might get what you want.

How much did they charge you for the one shock?  I agree you need to call Pontiac Customer service.  Never ever agree to let anyone do any work on anything without a call about the price.

When I take my other cars in, I usually say and write on the service form.  Fix if under 200 bucks and call first if over.

Bob and Chuck are correct.   Call Pontiac customer service, the number is in your glove box book.   You shouldn't have been charged...

I agree about calling customer service but don't forget to call the service manager and whoever else at that dealer that is higher up then the service writer that you dealt with.  When I have dealt with customer service in the past they always "try to work things out with the dealer" and the dealer ends up telling CS a lie about what happened so as to cover their own butts.  Also remind everyone that you talk to that a happy customer usually only tells two or three people about their positive experience but an unhappy customer will tell everyone that will listen and can GM and the dealer afford that kind of negative PR at a time like this?

I have had 3 shocks replaced under warranty, not sure where you got the idea they should be replaced in pairs. That applies to tires. I have never paid one penny to have them replaced, I had to drive in and they verified the leak by bending over and looking at the shock, not even on the lift. They ordered the shock and replaced it for free. These shocks are known to go bad A LOT! My left rear has been replaced twice. All 3 went bad at under 15,000 miles. If I was going to spend money on new shocks they damn sure wouldn't be the factory ones they would be Koni at a minimum.
