Which 3M tape for hood vents?
« on: June 11, 2021, 07:01:05 AM »
I've a problem with my new vents and can't solve it!

The chrom of my hood vents peeled of and so I decided to buy new ones.
Since  Opel has been sold to PSA they don't sell any Saturn parts anymore. :banghead:

So my best friend Sol Asylum helped me to get the vents from the USA. :yay:

I removed the old ones (with fishing line) and cleaned the whole area with alcohol. :buff:
Finally I installed the vents and everything looked pretty good.

3 days later we had a pretty warm day and the vents started to come off at the front and rear end.
I've tried everything, heating the plastic a little bit, pressing them into position etc, but nothing helped. :buff:
(Sol Asylum supposed that the adhesive has gotten too old / I supposed that they have been bend too much).

Finally I've been near by the local car wrapping company and I decided to ask them about my problem.
They told me that Sol has been right and that the adhesive tape is too old or it has been stored in the wrong place. :gaah:

The company owner told me to buy new vents or adhesive tape.

He couldn't tell me which tape and where to buy it, because GM used a special heavy duty tape (maybe heat resistant). :idk:

Does someone know which is the correct 3M tape, Sol and I would appreciate any help.

(by the way is it possible that the spell check isn't working?)

Not going to get a tape to hold better than this. It IS available in a 5 foot (1.524 m) roll as well.

Thanks Bob!  :yay:

Do you know if this tape is available in different width or will I have to cut it?

For sure it's not available in Germany, but I'll ask Sol for a helping hand.

Yeah, use 3M Molding Tape like SlyBob said.  Although it's formed as a 'tape' it's actually a mastic.  Forms itself into the gaps, never dries, never goes non-sticky.

Personal story: It came with a Garmin GPS mount that I put in our old 2001 Honda minivan.  Last year we finally scrapped the van (19yrs old, 240,000+ miles, never garaged) and I took the mount off. I was able to scrape the old 'tape' off both the mount face and the dash of the van and I have it saved in a ball on my workbench for holding things small items while I work on them.  Yes still plenty sticky and pliable.  Cool stuff.

Sure it is: https://www.amazon.de/doppelseitiges-Hochleistungsmontage-wasserdicht-Schaumstoffband-Innendekore/dp/B08C4Y9WW2/

Thank you!

I'm not quite sure if that's the same tape like the one in the USA (checked the numbers).

Additionally I read the recessions and it seems it's the same tape I had some time ago.

I don't know what they did to the tape (some say it's a Chinese copy), but it had severe problems to stick on my bumper. :banghead:

I think I'll go with the U.S. original one. :D

I've been right!

The 3M tape is from China (copy of the U.S. origin)!!! :banghead:

Shenzhen XinZhong Technology Co., Ltd.
Floor 11D Xinhai Building,
Nanshan Road. Nanshan District,
Shenzhen
China
518000

Can we please get rid of this Chinese crap. :slap:

I want to read "Made in USA" or "Made in Germany", that's the real stuff. :usa:

Ok, cars need to be from the USA, they are the best ones.

I think it will be an upgrade for the Chinese product, but as an American tape I would refuse to stick on something made in China.

Honestly that Chinese company should be sued for using the name 3M.

I seem to remember the grills having a made in Mexico sticker with them.  They weren't too eager to leave the States I can tell you.  The post office took their sweet time, like 3 weeks to go from central Hellinois to Chicago.

Yeah I've heard in the past that there is a big market for 3M tape knockoffs.

Don't forget that they shipped the parcel from Chicago to Washington DC. :banghead:

The Chinese should be punished for stealing U.S. inventions and copying U.S. products.
