Topic: Need front suspension but half the parts are out of production

I've been hearing a thumping noise from the front of my 2008 Saturn Sky Redline. I took it to a local shop and was told I basically need everything between the control arms. We both searched dealers, auto parts stores, and the internet we both had the same results.

I really don't think it's at all wise let alone safe to use salvage parts for the discontinued items. Do I have any options or do I part out the car?

Have you looked at aftermarket sources or only GM parts suppliers?

I doubt you need to replace the springs but if you did there are upgrades that you can probably find.

I wouldn't part it out because it needs shocks.

If a repair shop is telling you to replace springs as wear items, I?d get a second opinion. How many miles on the car? I can see some bushings or ball joint needing work. Maybe even a shock or four. But something smells off.

I am still running cars that are 65 years  old on their original springs. Unless they crack or lose temper they don't usually go bad.

You can buy aftermarket shock units complete with springs for $1000 for all four.

Other option is to call junk yards.  Find a wrecked one.

Safe to say, many of us agree something is amiss.  Can you give us more details on your car?  Some of us may have spare parts sitting in our garages that can help you.  And - please - see if you can get a second opinion on your cars needs.

The dust shield is definitely reusable, unless it's rusted all the way through where it mounts.
