Installed DDM Backbone & Pro-Beam
« on: March 22, 2009, 05:22:34 PM »
:yay: weather was nice, pulled GXPsy up on ramps and installed the DDM backbone & Pro-beam.    :woohoo:
Took about 2.5 hrs and installation was somewhat smooth.
Just got back a  :drag: through twisties near our house, top down, wind in my hair, and GXPsy felt great.  I could tell the difference in how well GXPsy handled the curves, turns and corners.

Just one mnor issue/complaint.  While at stoplights/stopsigns I could hear this noise  :gaah: coming from under the car, near the back wheel on the driver's side. My Magnaflow exhaust was rubbing up against the Pro-beam   :gaah:
If I was moving or put the car in neutral, the noise wasn't there.   :gaah:
So I guess that means, I shouldn't be stopping but keep on moving so the noise doesn't start.

Jeff said when he installed the Pro-beam he thought that might happen, and that I'll probably need to drop the exhaust a smidgen. (What's a smidgen anyway :idk: ).
But that's for another day.. :cryin:

I can't drive around and sound like some ricerocket wanna be.   :(

Has anyone else with a magnaflow had this issue with the Pro-beam?

Here's a few pics,

Overall, I very happy and pleased with how well she handles and how more stabilized she feels.  Thanks DDM   :D

Oh, I guess I'd better go to the Mod meet #5 thread and have Joe take me off for the backbone & pro-beam,

The noise you were hearing was the magnaflow exhaust rubbing against the probeam.  If you take the exhaust down and put a small dent in the exhaust where the probeam and the exhaust meet.  The sound that you were hearing will go away.

:gaah: Yeah, thanks Joe jr......that's what we figured.  I was hoping that there was a quick fix that didn't require taking the exhaust completely down and "reconfigure" an area on the pipe so it didn't rub.  Oh, well can't have everythng   :idk:

But I'm definitely happy with the results of the installation of both.

I had the same problem and dented the exhaust to fix that.  Great job on the installs.  You can still come to the meet.   You don't have to be doing mods to enjoy the great company.  Besides DDM Works will be there...

I think that I would bend the lip on the ProBeam before I would dent the exhaust. (Actually, I did.) Even a small dent could have a negative effect on exhaust flow, and, assuming that the interference with the Magnaflow happens in the same place as with the stock exhaust, bending the lip will not have any effect on the stiffness of the ProBeam.

Our Pro Beam just fit with the MagnaFlow. My question for you is:  Did you need to drop the exhaust, or move it at all to install the Backbone? That's the only thing (well that and the funds) holding us back from getting a Backbone.

Didn't have to drop the exhaust for the backbone, just a little pry with a prybar & done.

WOOHOO!  Got my backbone and probeam yesterday.  Would have put em on last night, but my brother asked me to demo his basement and kitchen, so I did that.  Today I will paint them to match my calipers and engine cover (because they are SO easy to see) and then clear coat them.  Maybe install them tomorrow if the paint and such is dry.

Should I take pics? or have we had enough pics of this install?

UPDATE: Backbone and ProBeam installed!  Both painted and clear coated to match my calipers - Duplicolor Metalspecks Retro Red Flake - coated with 500 degree engine clear.  I like the almost blood red color - it contrasts well with the Silver Graphite.  I had some extra "Redline" caliper stickers so I applied one to each part.  Left my memory stick at home so will have to upload pics of the Probeam tonight.

DDM 3/8" Race Backbone:

I have to say, installing the probeam was harder than I thought - 1/3 of my time was taken up by general stupidity (forgot 1/2 of the washers - took it all apart and did it again), the rest was lining up the forward suspension brackets.  No fault in the instructions from DDM - just a tedious task - laying on your back for 2.5 hours with all those foam core bits from drilling the crossmember drifting down into my eyes sucked - but it's done.

BTW - I have the RPI GT Exhaust - no clearance problems or rubbing at all with either the backbone or the ProBeam.
