Rear Diff and Manual Oil Change and clutch replacement.
« on: March 23, 2009, 08:22:09 PM »
Start by dropping the exhaust.  Since this was a Solo RCD, we just had to remove the middle and front half.

When draining the rear diff or the manual transmission, always remove the fill plug first.  If you strip it out, you won't be stuck with no fluid.  Tips from Randy @ DDM

Rear Differential

Filled with RP

Remove the BackBone and trans cover.  Draining the manual trans.  We need it lighter to remove it.

Support the transmission and remove the transmission support bracket.

Next - remove the drive shaft.

Rear diff with shaft out.

Remove all the bolts from around the transmission.  The one above the starter required a 17mm Deep on a universal and a 3" extension.  All tapped together so you don't have to keep fishing them out.  Remove the clutch hydraulic line and the neutral safety switch harness. Then lower the transmission

1) Is this a GXP?
2) Does it have the torque arm?
3) How many hours did it take?

I believe that this is Critterman's car so no its not a GXP and so it would not have the torque arm.

It kind of looks like the diaphragm fingers on the old pressure plate are a bit out of whack, was he having problems with the clutch or was this just an upgrade?

His car is supercharged and he had increased the HP (work by DDM) so much he felt a better clutch would be a good idea.

The clutch wasn't worn out but was quite weak due the springs mentioned above.  The job took about 5 hours total, mainly because one bolt is very difficult to get to.

A couple people pointed it out already, but his a 2.4L with a supercharger on it without the torque arm. There are a couple ways to spot it for future reference also. The 2.4L has the flywheel held to the crank with 6 bolts and the 2.0L has it held to the crank with 8 bolts. That should help in the future also just incase someone doesn't know what they have, 6 bolts 2.4L, 8 bolts 2.0L.

Hope that helps!

The SOB's forgot to tell you about the joke they played on me draining the rear.  It seems they had some metal shavings in their drain pan so a quick dip of the magnetic drain plug into the the oil and shavings residue resulted in metal chips on my drain plug.

Randy walks over to where I am with the plug and shavings with this long face saying, Critter this doesn't look good..........

Clutch was fine, it has a 3 gaps between the fingers on the pressure plate, why I don't know, but the clutch itself was fine, had lots of life left in it if I was running less horse power.   With this set up I need a lot stiffer clutch.   About 32k on the clutch that came out.
