How Do You Disable Daytime Running Lights?
« on: May 09, 2009, 07:24:18 PM »
Exactly what the title says.

My HID's are hooked up in fashion where they go on as soon as you start the car, day or night.  I always have to turn them off and it's annoying.  Is there a way to disable the daytime running lights, which is what I am guessing makes them come on all the time?

Open up the relay box under the hood and pull the #48 relay, take it apart and put a piece of paper/plastic between the metal contact points. Put it back together and no more drl's.

Sounds like an idea...will that have any risk of catching fire?

Is the relay box another name for the fuse box?

?
Why not just take the relay and or fuse #48,#49 out if your disabling it by not having the contacts make contact?

I was thinking that, but there must be a reason.

Try pulling the fuse and/or relay first.  You might have warnings in your DIC indicating that the DRL aren't working (DUH!).  Also be sure to check that the lights function normally otherwise with the fuse or relay removed.  I'd try it on my own car, but I'm a few thousand miles away from it...  only for a few more weeks, though!

Just remove the DRL fuse #49 to disable the DRLs. I did it on mines and no problem, no DIC messages or anything. Autolight still works fine.

You can also remove the DRL relay too with no problems or alerts. I took out 1st the fuse, (no problem), then the relay,(no problem). No effect on the lights or autolight feature. But if your tryin to avoid the flickering, you still have to get the DRL harnest because removing the problem with the flickering due to lower voltage form the DRL system.....I don't have the harnest and mines do flicker once in awhile. I wanna see truely how much it "shortens" the life on the bulbs, if it does.

I'm going to try this too, I hate having to turn them off every time I start the car.  I don't want people seeing me before it's too late  :drive:

It really doesn't shorten the life of the bulbs but can shorten the life of the ballast/igniter if done continuously for a period of time over time.
With that said you would need to flicker the lights continuously for a long period of time and over time to over heat the ballast and cause premature failure of the ballast.  It's very similar to the florescent lights that have a ballast.  When the tube goes bad it will cause the ballast to keep firing to try to light the tube.  The continuous firing of the ballast causes heat which in turn if left unchecked will cause the ballast to fail due to the excess heat that burns the ballast out.
My other vehicle has both fogs and heads that are HID and when I lock my vehicle both flash.  Ive had them on for 5yrs now and bulbs and ballast are just fine and I used that vehicle as a daily driver up until I bought the GXP so I get in and out of the vehicle at least 6 times a day.

Thanks Dark!  I just did this and it's perfect!  No more switching them off every time I start the car.  You rock.

I've notice that when I turn off the autolights the display on the radio gets brighter.  Does yanking the fuse have any affect on the display brightness or will it remain dimmed as tho the lights were still on?

The dash lights are only dimmer when the actual headlights are on, not the DRLs. The dash lights will still be full brightness if this fuse is pulled, as long as the sensor sees enough light to keep the headlights off. I did this to keep my projectors from being lit during the day.

Well when I had my car out today in the bright sun and turned off the auto lights the radio brightness increased, I was not imagining this I know it happened.

Interesting. I'll have to try that on mine. Usually when I first start the car, the sensor is turning the headlights on first by default. It then switches to DRL after a minute or so, and the dash lights will get brighter on their own when this happens. I notice this most when I start the car in the garage. There's probably not enough light in there to trip the sensor. If you flip the auto lights switch before this happens you will definitely notice the dash lights get brighter.  I have the fuse pulled on mine now. I just went out to the garage and turned on the key, but did not start the car. I released the parking brake. (the DRLs wont come on with the brake engaged). The headlights were on right away, and the dash lights were dim. I then placed a bright flashlight over the little sensor on the dash. After a minute or so; the headlights went off, and the dash lights got brighter. All automatically.

I pulled the fuse only, and not the relay.  The lights don't go on with the car anymore unless it is dark, which wouldn't be my DRL's anyway...so it worked on mine.  If I switch the lights off, the message says lights off, which means the car thinks the lights are on at startup, but they don't actually go on bc the fuse is pulled.

The '06 model is different. The DRLs are the turn signals on those. On the '07 up they are the headlights. Look on the underside of the fuse box cover. Is there a slot labeled "DRL"? If so what is it?

Sadly, no there isn't anything labeled DRL. Of course if it was I probably wouldn't be asking the question...oh who am I kidding, I probably would :cryin:

Yea, that's odd.  I had both...it was a 20 amp fuse (yellow).

hey guys and gals.
all 07 and 08 GTs in Greece have the same "problem". 09  work fine. Megas is trying to figure this out from our German kappa friends, so i thought i would ask here too.

when we start our GTs the DRL are on and stay on unless we switch them off and then th message auto lights off appears.
the problem is that when we turn them off, auto lights do not work, meaning if it gets dark or we get into a tunnel or something, lights will not go on automatically. we have to do it manually.

any thoughts how we can make the auto light feauture work?

thx in advance
