GMPP Tune for GXP and Redlines
« on: December 13, 2008, 05:16:47 PM »
19212670 Performance Upgrade Kit for Solstice

Applicable: 2007, 2008, 2009 Solstice GXP/SKY RedLine

Retail Price: $650

Installation labor: not included. Guideline is 1 hour installation.

Retail Availability:
2007-2008 Model Year available now.
2009 Model year estimated 2nd Quarter 2009, after introduction of 2009 2.0l turbo model in production (requires different calibration/software and certification after the production application has been sold)

Premium fuel is REQUIRED with this kit.

This performance upgrade enables no-lift shift feature.

What's in the box:
1 - 11589015 Bolt Tmap Sensor
2 - 88988320 Connector Sen-MAP w/ leads
1 - 12602863 Sticker Premium Fuel
1 - 12626987 Label Cert
2 - 12626998 O-Ring T-MAP
2 - 55206797 Sensor T-MAP (Bosch Part # 0 281 002 845, supposed to be used on Alfa Romeo 159 1.9 JTD)
1 - (npn) GM Performance Decal (missing from my kit)
1 - 19212711 Instruction Sheet

You can purchase the parts of the kit with these part numbers, but the necessary software flash can only be installed through a dealership, so it will not do you any good. The instructions have an authorization code, and this code combined with your VIN is what is needed to install the powertrain software into your car.

There are several software calibration files, depending on whether your car is a Solstice/SKY,  manual or automatic transmission, and whether your car has a brake vacuum pump or OHB.

The kit is emissions legal in all 50 states.

How is it installed?
The TMAP (Temperature/Pressure) Sensor on the post-charge air cooler/pre-throttle blade tube, and the MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) Sensor on the manifold are replaced by the same Bosch TMAP sensor above. These sensors are an off-the-shelf part, and prior to install require the O-ring to be replaced with a thicker O-ring.

Your old sensors are cut off, and the new sensors are installed using provided adapter harnesses and shrink wrap.

Then, your car is flashed with the new software through an internet connection and a Tech 2. This calibration is released by the authorization code and your VIN, and can only be installed at a dealership or other authorized service center.

DeepBlueGXP, Joe just your honest opinion ot this upgrade by GM.  I fully realize what the competitors are offering.  I have always been hesitant primarily because of potential warranty issues and for that reason alone, I was waiting for something to come down the pike from GM.  Well, now it has!

Honestly, you are up on the technical mods that are out there, and I have some knowledge on them.  What is you opinion of this one compared to the others?
As you know, I totalled my 1995 Pontiac Firebird Formula and it was 280 HP and loads of torque.  That is why I have been somewhat hesitant about some of the others.

I assume GM is offering a warranty on this mod?  Please give me your honest opinion.  For value received against quality received is this a deal?

GM does warranty this mod.  It does alot for the car, you will feel like you are driving a new car.  Well worth the money.  It is for sale on CrateEngineDepot for $550.  ChuckDoc has ordered it.   I'll pm you the link.

Is yours a manual or automatic.

I know for a lot of people this is absolutely the best way to go, you don't have to deal with vendors and shipping, or detuning to go to the dealer. I believe it will also open up some new capabilities for those of us that want to play around, the new sensors should work quite well with the other tunes. The system on the 2.0 being some what different in that it uses a TMAP, instead of a regular MAP has been hard to upgrade to a 3 BAR system, the T in TMAP stands for temperature, as the sensor also measures the "charge temperature" as well as controlling boost. The current TMAP is a 2.7 BAR, this means that at 4.9 volts, the max output of the sensor the car can have up to approximately 25 lbs of boost, the 3 BAR will allow up to 29 lbs of boost if you can keep the charge cool. The tendency of the 2.0 to unlearn mods is supposedly turned off, I believe it is just set to a higher threshold before it unlearns. The temp sensor will still shut down boost if the charge gets hot, that is part of the safety system. This means the new GMPP tune will most likely take even more advantage of a larger intercooler, as it will keep the charge cooler and allow the car to make more boost before hitting the safety threshold. I think the GMMP kit will also help us take advantage of gains from exhaust and intake mods that have previously been unlearned by the ECM as both of these also reduce temps. Gains from the GMPP kit should exceed claims by GM with a good exhaust and intercooler.

Lilgoat, do you think our favorite dealer will do the install. If you drop by you might ask Jay.  Thanks
Mine should be here today.  Tracking UPS says out for delivery but it is 6:30 and I keep looking out the window.  It left laural md at 6 AM.

Jim, did you ever get the grey clips you took off your car and gave to me?  That was really nice.  For people that do not know lilgoat, he will literally give you the parts off his car.

 :gaah:  What a horrible experience.

Ok, I just got home. What a nightmare, dealing with GM. Ok, I have to calm down. Just to end the suspense; I got the tune, and the car is amazing. This review is just from seat of the pants driving and may be technically all a$$ backwards. It does not have as much boost as Westers. With Westers I got around 21 of boost and coming home I only got 19. The temp outside was 42 degrees and when I had the Westers in the summer I got 20-21. Now the good part. The torque is amazing. I have the automatic transmission and I came to a stop 3 times and floor it. 3 different roads in case the road surface was unique. Each time I floor it with the traction control on I spun the tires and lit up the low traction light. I never did this with Westers so I assume it is the torque. The car seems equally fast with both.

If Westers gets a test car, I know with the Nanny controls off and just an increase in boost, this car will be really fast.

Now for the install: The O rings "Tmap O-rings Part number 12626998" were both dry rotted. The tech showed me and if you just bent them they split. He said he could not reuse the old ones and did not have any that size at the dealership. He looked the part number up in the computer and it did not exist. (Way to go GM). We called CrateEngineDepot and the guy just said I had to talk to a GM engineer and they would call the dealer back. I gave them the dealer number and they did call back. He told the service writer he would ship new ones out next day delivery, so I can not fault their good intentions, BUT THEN GM HUNG UP THE PHONE. THE SERVICE WRITER SAID HE NEVER ASKED FOR THE NAME OF THE DEALER OR THE DEALER #. I am hoping CED will help me and I will post on the other thread plus PM him. Anyway the Dealer crafted some homemade O rings (not too scary ) and then came the real fun. GM was very very slow to send the Flash for the tech 2. Many calls later, which I could not hear and calling the Dealer IT guy plus back and forth with GM. Not me, but the Dealer. It finally worked.

I told the service manager there was no way I was going to pay 4 hours labor for the install. He asked me what was fair and I said two. He said how about 1 and 1/2 and we agreed that was fair (150 bucks) I was really happy with the dealership as they said if it threw a code, he would give me a rental. I cried, not another Chevy Cobalt  :((see my other posts on the big board) and he called GM tech back and they finally got the flash done.

Yikes

I will now try to get new O rings and Deepbluegxp will install them :woohoo:

In summation, open the O ring package and flex them and see if you see cracks. Do this before you go to the dealer. Number 2, make sure your dealer contacts GM before they cut the wires and make sure they will speedily send the tune.

Anyway that's my saga but it is all worth it. I just think GM management has some serious bugs to work out. There is no way a new part should be dry rotted (way to go, GM buying parts from Mexico) There is also no way a part number should not be in the computer system. Do not release a package until everything is good to go. Remember you are trying to keep customers happy. It does not take 2 hours to send a tune electronically. This stuff travels at the speed of light. (186,000 miles per sec) It did not come from alpha centuri.

Holy cow Chuckdoc. Sounds like you had a tough time but it all turned out well in the end. I know from talking to you before that you concerned about getting the tune. The "O"rings should be a standard or a metric ring and you should be able to purchase at a wholesaler that sells "O"rings. There is one about 10 miles from here, not that it helps you at all. As you said rotted rings should never have been shipped with the package and I'd like to see someone explain that one.

Anxious to hear more after you drive it for a while. Looks like this is something else to add to my list.

There are only five pages of English, the other 10 pages were French and Spanish.  :drive:

Edit: I should have mentioned that although the original file included 15 pages, I had asked that DeepBlueGXP delete the French and Spanish pages before he posted it on the site.

I have the Westers tune already, and it's great. :drag:Iwas just wondering if we can get some of those features on the GM tune on our cars , or should we buy the kit and play with that, I don't know how limited we are with our current tunes. The reason I'm asking is because the kit is cheap right now, so we can pick it up for less before the price jump if it's not to late already.LOL Or is it best to wait it out, and see what Lyndon comes up with , do you think Lyndon can get those new sensors to work with our current tune?
