Thought I Lost My Turbo
« on: June 03, 2009, 08:56:13 AM »
I was turning onto my local expressway, gave it full gas to get up to speed(yeah right) and then a big BOOM PPSSSSSSS and the car started bucking. I immediately let off on the gas and drove 30 mph back to my house(10 minutes). I blew off the hose that connects the turbo hose on the pass side ic pipe. The hose slipped out from the stock clamp but didn't fully pop off the ic pipe, go figure a stock t bolt clamp not holding up. I put the clamp back on and tightened it, no codes no problem........ my main question/concern is this: Because of the immediate drop of boost at wot, should i be concerned that i may have overspun the turbo? It wasn' at wot for more than a few seconds after the pop. I am not sure if the solenoid would have/could have stopped an overspin.....Any thoughts on if I should be concerned either now, or down the road with the turbo?

No concern...it happens when you increase the boost...you have to upgrade to T-bolt style clamps and make sure everything is on tight!

thanks, I will rest easier now. I was surpised that the tbolt clamp that came from the factory loosened. The yellow tamper indicating "paint" seal wasn't broken either. Maybe the spring on the clamp fatigued causing it to loosen up just enough?....at least now  for sure it is tight.  :drag:

Same thing happened to me the other day but just not with a loud noise.
No, you don't need to worry about damage.

No need to worry about damage, but the stock clamp there is not really that great.  Most people, including myself, upgraded all of the factory clamps to T-Bolt.  It is a cheap and important modification, especially if you are tuned or planning on getting a tune.

Happened to me with the 5.2
Lasted about 15 seconds with a really shakey car.
After that it went back to normal performance.

thanks, I will rest easier now. I was surpised that the tbolt clamp that came from the factory loosened.

Not to be picky, but I feel this needs to be cleared up...

Factory clamps are not "t-bolts" (which refers to a style of clamp, not their location). Factory clamps are "worm-gear" clamps, and just aren't that strong and are easy to strip if you try to tighten em down too much.

T-bolt clamps are a different style of clamp that are much more solid and won't strip.

the clamps that are on the hose connecting the turbo outlet to the hard ic pipe are t bolt clamps. The rest of the clamps are worm clamps. The factory must have thought the tbolts were only needed on this initial hose. I have already replaced the throttle body clamps with tbolts. the ic clamps are still stock. Those seemed to be ok when i installed the ic - i will replace those at somepoint too. But from the factory, turbo outlet to hard pipe, tbolts, the rest as stock are worm clamps.

The ones rich71 are talking about are T-Bolts and just need to be tightened.  I still have the stock clamps on the IC so that shouldn't be an issue either.

no problem     I hope you get your sol soon. being on this forum(don't know your schedule to purchase) while you wait to buy  and to be able to research/read up/correspond on the kappa ahead of time is going to give you an edge as an owner for sure. I was the 4th person to get a redline at my dealer, ordered 1/07 delivered 5/5/07. At that time you couldn't even test drive one as all were preordered and very limited allocations.  There was much to learn about the turbo kappa then, and we all tinkered and watched others tinker to see what works and didn't. There is still much to learn, but this forum and its members all support each other and are honest in what we say and I can say that we all can't wait for you to get your kappa and share the mild frustrations and shear joy this platform brings

Visited a local dealer yesterday. They're receiving 2 mysterious coupes in 2 weeks... hopefully I can line up their arrival with being reemployed and financing.

Hi Spiky, i dont have an upgraded ECM on my GT, but maybe i decide to get one soon. however i would like all to be ready for an upgrade.
is it possible that you show me in pictures what hoses i should change and what clamps to change to T-bolt? i would appreciate this.

No concern...it happens when you increase the boost...you have to upgrade to T-bolt style clamps and make sure everything is on tight!

I am really worthless when it comes to adding mods myself.  So, it comes down to asking someone on the forum from the Kansas City area to do it, or asking a mechanic at Ford or a competitor to do it for a charge.  If I go to a GM dealer, I will probably loose my warranty, so in effect, I am screwed!  I am afraid to really push it because I will probably blow off the clamps and then throw a code.

So, I have been driving somewhat careful.  Anyone out there want to come to the aid of a Moderator in need?  I will offer a very good home cooked steak as payment.
Thanks,
Ron

Ron this is actually pretty simple to do, its literally just loosening one bolt and then tightening a new one.  Changing this should have no effect on your warranty call your service manager and ask in a hypothetical way "I have been told that the intake pipe clamps from the factory are not as good as "T" bolt style ones is this something that you can change for me if I provide the clamps, will it void my warranty?"  Don't tell them about your tune (I would have recommended you not tell LG about it either ) what they don't know won't hurt them.

If I lived closer to you I would change them for you, no problem as it shouldn't take very long to do.

the only clamp that takes a little finessing is the throttle body clamp. the dealer would have to cut the original clamp out. It is easy to do, but i am not sure if the dealer would want to do that, modify a stock part. I personally think they shouldn't care, but that clamp is the most important one to fix. I am not sure if you already had that done or not. the other ones on the turbo pipe are a no problem switch. Mine hasn't slipped since i tightenend it down. I am going to mark it with a grease pen just to be sure.

Why would you need to cut the clamp?
Just remove the entire drive side IC Pipe including the Elbow.
Make sure to undo the bolts on the brackets at the front of the engine bay that the IC pipe attaches to
Separate the elbow from the IC pipe
Then remove the clamp by cutting away the piece of rubber on the elbow that the stock clamp goes under.
You will need to do that anyway to get the T-Bolt clamp to fit flush as they are a little bit wider than the stock clamps.
Or you could spend a little bit of money and get a much better option.

yes, thats what i was sayin, cutting the rubber to get the clamp out. An anal dealer might not like to modify a stock part like that. the poster mentioned the dealer and warranty, thats what i meant. a regular mechanic won't have a problem doing it and yes it is very easy.. Its crazy that they put such garbage clamps on the throttlebody hose. They must have thought that there wasn't enough boost reaching it to cause it to leak and only chose to put tbolts on the turbo outlet hose.
