10K over sticker... are they HIGH???
« on: June 11, 2009, 02:14:47 PM »
So, yesterday I got a phone call from the local dealer (30 min away) that's getting in a few coupes. Just got their first one in (black, just like I want it). How soon could I be there? Told him I was planning on heading down to that area in about half an hour, so probably be an hour or so.

90 min or so later I get there... Car is in the wash bay and apparently there are already a couple people looking at it wanting to deal (I say apparently, becasue I never saw them). I go back to the wash bay to check it out. Yup, looks cool. Has the chrome wheels (I'd prefer aluminum), but close enough. Salesman says lets go back and talk numbers...

Me: Are you taking credit union pricing?
Sales: <sad face> no.... wait, what is that?
I explain
Sales: no...
Me: MSRP at least then?
Sales: At MSRP we're only making $800. We have other dealers offering us $5000 over for this car.
My girlfirend: It's not our fault you have a bad deal with the factory.
Me: Actually, I beleive the difference between invoice and MSRP is $1100. Isn't that kinda normal?
Sales: We had a meeting this past weekend and we're looking at $10,000 over.

 :gaah:

Us: No thanks. Not worth it. Goodbye.

So, is this normal? What the hell? I love the looks of the Coupe, but I plan to mod it. $40k is territory for a LOT nicer cars that I wouldn't mod very much...

So, normally I would have no problem going and buying it in another state... it gets a little more complicated though.

1) The nearest state is Oregon, where they have no sales tax. That would mean paying a lump sum of tax when I registered the vehicle, which I don't have right now.
2) I have a vehicle I need to trade in. Oh, I know, you're saying "Sell it privately. That'll solve your sales tax problem too". Good sense, but it's a PT Cruiser, and I'd guess there's a ton of those on the market, and it's a Canadian car which means it has a kmph cluster in it. I figure it would be a ton easier to trade it than sell it.

<sigh>

Maybe I'm just not destined to get a Coupe.

Do you get any type of Dealer Discount?
If so, they have to honor it.

I'm eligible for credit union pricing, but I've seen lots of examples of dealers not honoring that... As far as I know, I've not eligible for anything else. Do they have AAA pricing? Hrm, I wonder what the deal is with Microsoft (corporate) pricing. I'll have to look that up.

I just checked and we don't have anything with local dealers (though I just found out I could get a Dodge for below invoice). We do have GM Supplier pricing, but they don't have the Sol Coupe on there...

Too bad they are so expensive, they are much better racecars than the convertibles.

If I was there, I would really get in there face about this.
I understand they are hot, but there is no excuse for them to sell it for more than the sticker price.

I'd be a total ass and tell them to enjoy the extra money after they no longer have a job.

The more I think about it, the more it pisses me off.
In Today's atmosphere with the American Car companies I find this unacceptable.

Here you have someone who wants to buy an American car.
Instead of offering for a fair price, the dealer is trying to fawk them.
So they are going to turn someone away and that person will end up buying a non American Car.

Nice Job A-Hole,
Way to help the cause.

Maybe you should approach them with this line of thought and see if it will get them to at least sell it for Sticker Price?

Oh, my girlfriend was hot over this. She went thru it with the pre-orders of the PT when some dealers were selling ordered cars out from under people for 10k over. The part that really got her upset was him whining like a baby that they "only make $800". Though. That's the deal you made.

It very nearly drove me to walk across the street to buy a Mitsubishi Evo. Far more car for only a little more money.

3/4 of my top picks right now are either Pontiac or Dodge, and frankly I'm pretty upset with what dealers of both of these vehicles are trying to pull. I was on a Dodge lot the other day and they wanted 60k for an SRT Challenger. Um, no... I believe that MSRPs for about 45. Want an RT (which is what I'd actually want)... That'll be 50k for a 35k car please... W.T.F!?!?!? Aren't you guys supposed to be trying to talk ME into buying??? For that, I'll just keep my perfectly good current car, thanks...

Lots of Sols & Skys sold for more than sticker when they first came out,  not sure now that demand once again exceeds supply with the factory shutting down  it shouldn't happen again,  prices are a reflection of supply and demand. I feel for anyone hearing MSRP +$10k but if someone is willing to pay then that's the price. Soon they will be gone...

We paid $2500+ under MSRP, we drove 45 min  :D (When the owner of the dealership found out that Jeff wanted it, told the sales manager....do what you have to do to sell it to them as I know it's going to a very good home...helps having bought 3 vehicles from them in the past 2 years, plus they got a birthday cake on GXPsy's 1st birthday, 2 large fruit baskets during the holidays, etc) Jeff also negoiated a significant discount on the removable cloth top (on order)

I think it just really depends upon the dealer and whether they really want to sell the car.  Wish you the best on your search.

Get used to it. Why do you think they are eliminating all the dealerships? Hint: It isn't so you can get better pricing on your next new car.

I told the salesman when I bought #14 if it goes .01 over MSRP, I walk.  And for the current GXP, I paid well below sticker with discounts to about 4k off.

what city/state/zip are you looking?

Redmond/Bellevue/Seattle 98008/98052 are the zip codes we use most. You get the idea though seattle washington.

I am the girlfriend who was PO'd. This is the kind of BS that just sends me over the edge, don't take me for a chump. They were trying to scam us by saying there two other buyers there in the showroom and the sucker with the weakest will takes the car. Fine by me, I will scoop it when they get it repo'd. I did that when I have bought other cars/trucks. I never did see anyone else there but I think they were trying to set up a bidding war between buyers. I know David Ellis Chrysler did that back in 2000 when the PTCruiser came out, they called me one day saying they had a PT in the showroom, I walk in and there 15 other people there and a sales walks out and says "I will start taking bids at 10K over sticker". I walked out disgusted and have never gone back there for anything.

I won't pay over sticker for a car EVER, even paying sticker is a rip. But I will cause at least I was prepared for the car to cost that so the dealer does make a healthy profit, I told the salesman that then he started whining that on the G8 we were standing next to they only make $800 dollars if they sold it at sticker. Not my fault you cut a crappy deal with the factory. And the showroom doesn't make money the service dept makes the money for the dealership, you want that 10K over for you cause you get a healthy chunk of that. So we walked.

I will laugh when they go under. Did I mention I hate whining? And who the hell orders a bunch of G8's all as auto trans cars then wonders why they sit on the lot?

Going out of state also is another set of issues, car trade in, time off work(he just transferred jobs and starts new one on Monday) so time off is hard to get. I would do it since I've done it, sure the sales tax hurts like a B when you get home but you have the car. Its Liquid's choice, I just keep trying to think of ways to get it done. I will fly down and drive it back, can your dad sell the car up north so we don't have to deal with the canadian gauge cluster issue. You get the idea.

11 GXP Coupes in the area, this is how I found mine.

http://www.pontiac.com/locateVehicle.do?year=2009&make=002&modelDesignator=2MG07&modelId=18247&gmModelId=86&modelName=Solstice&pvc=275&styleId=308407&searchType=0&postalCode=98008&proximity=300&searchCity=&searchState=&VIN=&vendorId=&orderNumber=&multiVendorIds=&maximumCount=100

Alot of Black, one yellow, one blue, one silver, one red

Yup, I've done that search... I think 3 or 4 of them are (will be) at Valley Pontiac, the dealer we were just at. They only just got their 1st one in. Several of them are in Oregon (which becomes a pain unless I can easily find a buyer for my PT first). Looks like 4 of them are autos too...

I'm going to call the Tacoma dealer (Gilchrist) tomorrow and see what they say. They're apparently getting a black, red and yellow. Not too into the red or yellow. Black is my 1st choice, but I'd take sly, deep, or wicked.

Thanks

Eh I'm old school I want to shift. Its more fun.

LiquidPT didn't have a choice. I would have knocked that salesmans teeth down his throat in another 5min if we hadn't left. LiquidPT knows I would do it too.

It was just so blantant that really pissed us off, and what is worse is that some sucker will pay it happily and never know just how bad he got suckered. Til he meets some of you guys who didn't pay the "Sucker Tax" and his ears turn red and smoke pours out in frustration.
