Question about a tune?
« on: June 29, 2009, 12:23:46 PM »
HI guys I'm a new member here but along time follower here and in the other forum.

I have a 2008 solstice gxp I bought brand new in 2007. The only mods I have is a KNN filter, Dejon Spring and a custom intercooler sprayer.  All I can say is I love this car :drive:  Well after all this time I finally decided to get a tune for my car.  Because of cost,  I'm leaning towards the Pcmforless tune.
Before I decide to buy it I would like to hear opinions from people that have this tune. And most important I just want to make sure that this tune is Legit "(GMR)"

I'd appreciate all the help I can get

Thanks

ED

I'd say either go with the GM tune or Westers. I'm hoping to have the Westers tune by the end of the month, been crunching the numbers today to see if I can afford it.

Well, it's not that simple. First off, I've got an 09, and so far lyndon hasn't tuned one yet. (that I know of)

I should have the funds, but there's alot that needs to happen.

1. Figure out how to run HP tuners. Mac user, don't want to have to buy windows. Sent HP tuners and e-mail asking about this, waiting on a response.
2. Talk to Lyndon, and make sure he's willing/able to tune an 09 if I e-mail him the stock tune. Don't want to buy HP tuners then find out there's something holding his tuning up.
3. Buy HP Tuners.
4. Buy tune from Lyndon.

I am the biggest Wester's advocate there is, I will first off say that the PCM4less tune is good from what I have read. I do not personally know. I will throw a few reasons out for the Westers, free upgrades for life, he has over 30 different tunes for the GXP depending on mods. He will do a free tune on your next car, if you buy a tune, trade your car for a new Camaro he will tune the Camaro for free (as long as you sold the kappa). He is one of the top tuners in the business, when other tunes are good it is because of what he did, others learn from him. But any tune is better than none.

On a personal note he is just about the most honest man I have ever met.

If you do get the tune from PCMForless, one thing you may want to do is take the Dejon Spring out and put the OEM back.
They are a legit company and actually tune corvettes.
There is a charge if you need upgrades to your tune.

I heard from Lyndon on 2009s, he's tuned them already and is setting one up for my Wife's coupe. :woohoo:  U-238, if you just buy the GM credits for the 2009 redline ($300.00), I'll be able to tune your car for you using HPTuners.  The $300 will do all sky's model year 2009 so every time you upgrade, I'll be able to write the Westers tune for you.  I'll also store the stock one for you just in case...

Thatnks Joe! That would be awesome, and very much appreciated. I should have the $300 this Friday, and we can work out how to exchange it then. I would still like to have my own copy of HP Tuners, but this would mean I wouldn't need to worry about it right away.

Yes Joe, I was aware of that, and was planning on getting a lifetime supporting membership here first. Would have done it sooner but I couldn't spare the cash.

You can just buy enough credits to just tune your car for $100 but that has always seemed dumb to me, maybe you can find someone else with a 2009 Sky to split costs with and do the whole model year. Or buy your own copy of HPT for $495 it comes with 8 credits.

No computer to run it on. Would have to buy windows, and a larger hard drive, to get it running on my current computer. $300 is much cheaper than the alternatives at the moment.

Actually, I think ME is supported by HP tuners. Was just talking to a friend and he has a laptop that should work as well. All I need is a working laptop with a USB drive.

If you do have an old, working laptop you'd be willing to part with, I might be interested in it.

I will rumage around and see what I can find when I get home, I have a bunch of old crap that might work. I know the one with ME needs a battery and it's expensive, I have a couple of more. I used to get the old throwaways from work and take 2 or 3 and make 1 that worked. None of them are very fast but they should be OK for HPT.

Okay HPT guys, I just received my HPT. What is the best way to set it up with the credits? With 8 credits do you use 2 of them to license your single vehicle and save the six or do you use the six to also do a model year?  Also, any tips or hooking it up and using it and things to avoid. Thanks...

It is your choice but almost everyone does the license the year, if you think you may want to do other cars. But remember it will do ANY GM car or truck, I have 4 different vehicles in the family I use it to tune. There are 2 main products, the scanner and the other one what ever it's called. The scanner is for real time scanning of your car while you drive and clearing CELS stuff like that, the othet one is for downloading and uploading your tunes. It takes about 20 minutes to download your factory tune, go ahead and start now we'll wait.

So it's just read entire and write entire with the editor under the Flash menu?

You are going to be waiting awhile for me Jim...  Just broke my foot so I am laid up for awhile and no clutch for me for at least a few weeks.  I was all set to order Westers this week and get it installed... ugh.

You don't need to use write entire, just write calibration is all I use takes about 2 minutes that way. Sorry about your ankle, you can still hobble over and do the read and upgrade you just can't test it.
