Driveshaft mount
« on: August 08, 2009, 10:57:03 AM »
Hey guys,
about 2 weeks ago i finally got around to mounting my DDM works extreme backbone. While I was crawling under the car something caught my eye. I noticed the driveshaft (pinion side) was mounted to the rearend with what looks to be a rubber joint. It was kinda dark in the garage because I broke the droplight bulb, but am I seeing correctly?
Ive never read about this on the forums before. Why not just a regular universal joint? Is it possible the rubber joint is the cause of the transmission backlash thump. Just a thought. What do you guys think?

From what I recall, it's an extremely hard rubber.  I doubt that there's enough flex there to call for a u-joint, considering that the differential doesn't move very much.  I'd be surprised if the source of the clunk is there.  As far as I can tell, it's just normal driveline lash that's more noticeable b/c we sit practically right on top of the differential.

is it possible the rubber winds up and springs back- when the car is put in gear, car starts to move, and then suddenly the clutch is stepped on.
thats when i get the thump.  very annoying in a parking lot when pulling out of a parking spot

IF you are getting a thump, it could be from the rear diff arm mount on the right side.  They have been know to cause the noise you hear.

the clunk is inherent to our differential design and is normal.  EMBARRASSING but normal..Some people has removed and installed a poly "energy" bushing to replace the rubber one that is on the passengers side front of the diff. The stock rubber piece compresses quite easily and by replacing it some say the clunk is reduced and sometimes gone, but you have more vibration. I have considered trying this but i didn't want the hassell of warranty issues on our sh1TTY DIFF by having them blame a failure because i reduced the flex that was part of the diff design. not that it would be denied, but i just don't want to deal with it for something i don't hear unless i am parking.. once my drivetrain warranty expires, i may press in the new bushing to see if it is any better. i haven't heard enough reviews either way for me to make a definitive postion....maybe someone here has installed it and has some thoughts on the subject?
