BOV Spring
« on: August 26, 2009, 11:13:29 AM »
I have a question/request. Does anyone have or can anyone do a log regarding the use of a stiffer BOV sping? I had installed the stiffer spring and did not notice an increase in steady boost. I only noticed a lag in keeping boost between shifts(i have a manual). Granted I am not the fasted shifter on the block, nor have i been able to train my right foot to only lift up halfway when shifting to try to compensate for throttle response lag. But others have noticed a lag in boost as well and have put the stock spring back in. I have the new "ss" tune and my pressure spikes to 23(thats a high as my stock sensors can read) then it locks in to 22 pounds. Basically i am asking is the stiffer spring even needed? My observations aren't scientific and I can't prove anything i am saying. I am not savy with data logging and my fingers don't fit well to to switch out the spring back and forth.. Just asking if someone has further detail to offer. I tried to ask the question on the BB and my thoughts got shot down as being ignorant on how a BOV works. My opinion is a stiffer spring takes more vacum to pull it open, so the stiffer spring will open later and close sooner and could cause some boost lag based on not shifting fast enough?

I have a Hahn adjustable blow off valve.  They claim it can handle up to 800hp.  The valve is hand adjustable and they say to adjust it to your desired way off driving.  If i tighten it[ more spring pressure] my turbo response kicks in slower.  If i loosen it [less spring pressue or tension] it responds quicker because it takes less boost to open the the valve I guess Graywolf

I have a Wester's Race tune and the stiffer BOV spring.  Don't know about the others, but I detect no boost lag as compared to the stock spring.  The steep steady upward angle on the dyno charts from the pulls last weekend I think verifies that the boost comes on relatively early (2000 rpm) and builds steadily.  The in car butt dyno feel is that it pulls steady and strong up to peak boost; 21-23 lbs @ 2000 all the up to the top of the tach depending on atmospheric conditions. I like my stiff spring. Blowoff seems crisper and the valve gate closedown snappier to me.  Just my  :2c:

With the stock K04 turbo it makes a difference.
With the Upgraded larger wheel you have to take it out, and use the OEM spring. The turbo gets very shaky at the upper RPM's.
