Broken Hose - looking for info
« on: January 05, 2010, 11:34:02 PM »
Today when checking under my hood I discovered a hose sticking up bobbing in the air.  It is a silver braided hose coming off the right side of the engine (out from under the plastic cover over the plugs) that connects to a hard plastic tube that is part of the plastic intake coming out of the air box.  It seems the plastic connection off the intake snapped off causing the braided hose to spring up.

Does anyone know off hand what this is?  It looks to be a vent hose but the metal braided hose makes me think it is under pressure.  I want to know if I can glue the plastic fitting back on the intake or if I need to replace it all together.  It looks like I'd need to replace the entire plastic intake assembly coming out of the air box.  I'll post a picture tomorrow if my description doesn't make sense.

Super Glue will actually hold if the break is clean at least if did for mine until I got it replaced.  The intake tube is around $100 IIRC since mine was replaced by the selling dealership which wasn't a GM dealer but a Ford dealer and they broke it during an inspection.
Have you had anyone check the air filter lately?
If the answer is yes that's when it probably broke.  If you torque the filter cover too much it will snap that little tube like a twig or at least weaken it so that you have problems later on.

DC - check with the goat, if I remember correctly he went to a local hardware store and replaced that broken plastic fitting with a brass one for a few bucks.

Critter is correct, I got a barbed brass fitting of the correct size from Lowe's, drilled the cover out a bit and screwed it in, been fine ever since. This is a very common problem, the glue might work but it will happen again. This is not the exact one I got but close, it was easy.

Guess I will have to watch the movie - haven't seen it.  Course, by then, you'll be someone else!

Thanks Ben, I wondered if anyone got that! Not to mention similar character flaws, and the location should be a clue as well, that is exactly where he is when last we see him...alive anyway.

I like this guy!

You should see the director's cut version if you haven't already.  Darker than Hell, but great.

That would be the one I saw, all 3 hours and something of it. Yes, very dark! The ending was ahh, not what I expected, but up until then it was awesome! The scenes with Dr. Manhattan walking around unencumbered were a bit unexpected.

So is your "my ride" designation an oblique reference to that aspect of the film?

Mostly it was just an obscure reference to my dream car, I would trade the Solstice for the wiener mobile in a minute!

If you watch the movie, you have better put aside half a day.  Man is it long.

Thank you for the info; I'll probably start glue as it is a clean break and I don't have tools to drill etc.  Now I'll have to check out The Watchman.

I recall seeing a post about this where the author suggested using a (spent) .22 cal shell with the (flat) end cut off.  He inserted it inside the pipe and body across the break, as reinforcement for the glue.

If you dont have a .22, you could try a craft/model shop.  They usually have a selection of small brass pipe/tubing in diff diameters - I'm sure one would fit.

Thank you- that is a creative solution.  I didn't realize this was a common issue but not surprising as it doesn't seem very well reinforced.  What is this anyway, PCV vent?

I don't know about using a spent bullet, living in DC you could get arrested for not having a bullet carry permit!

No way, Jim.  It is a double byfold flammis that forces xanium gas into the framis.

First time I found you to be wrong.

Chuck your thinking of the double by-pole flam-mis that deals with xyanium gas and the phramis.  Its a simple mistake but one that most first year hydrothermal adiabatic molecular dynamic engineer could explain.

I'm surprised there isn't a write up on how to fix this. I have the same issue and I'm not quite sure how to go about fixing it. I'd rather not glue it and i really don't want to replace it just yet. Lil goats method seems like a great idea I just wish there was more info. thanks guys!

I guess both methods are so simple that no one has put alot of effort into documenting it.
The other thing is, some aftermarket Intakes have the hard nipple built in

Here is my easiest Writeup that will help you out and prevent this from ever happening again
