2006 Solstice vs. 1953 Corvette!
« on: December 30, 2008, 02:32:49 PM »
From it's very beginning the Solstice reminded me of the early corvettes.  The idea of an open top roadster, just not the current high performance sports car idea of a Corvette,  the apparent size, the round front end...Check this comparison out:

...............................2006 Solstice........................1653 Corvette
height...........................50.2........................................52
length..........................157.2......................................167
width............................71.6.......................................72.2
wheelbase.....................95.1.......................................102
track.........................60.5/61.2..................................57/59
weight..........................2860......................................2850
HP.................................177.......................................150

When these figures came out a long time ago, I was intrigued at how close the similarities were.  It does now seem like it has been a long time ago since the early Kappa's were introduced.  It is fun however to sometimes reflect back and remember how close these peramiters were and are.  I am an old timer, and you will have to forgive me from time to time looking back on our heritage.

Yep! As the former owner of a 1960 Vette, the similarities are striking-although I liked the Vette interior better-even that bears a huge resemblance on a number of features/looks.
Never beat it through the twisties, that was the only car I've ever owned that gave me nightmares  :gaah: worried about it getting stolen, damaged, and back then it was only a classic, if that, since it was only 15 years old at the time. But I loved the way it sounded, and felt behind the wheel. To me, Vettes are akin to Harleys, some may try to imitate, but when you drive/hear the real deal, you know it. And the early ones especially.

Older vettes with the solid rear axle beat you to death going down the road.  I hated the ride

By the way, it's also an old skeptic thread accidentally deleted by Troy Roberts on SF.

I remember when I was 9 or 10 years old, that my crush's dad was a salesman for the main Chev-Olds dealer in London Ontario. He used to drive an ivory '53, or '54 vette with red interior. That car stayed in my mind, longer than his daughters. And, believe me, they were pretty special too! :yay: Anyway, never had the chance to own one, but I have always liked the early vettes. :yay: I do agree, that the Solstice, has many similar characteristics.
2008 Solstice GXP, 5 speed, sport suspension, sport pedals, limited slip diff., monsoon stereo, 18" chrome wheels, fog lights, cruise, power convenience package, A/C, no mods as of yet, only has 4100 kms on it.

Neat conversation! Being the proud owner of a 59 Vette and a 09 GXP I can compare easily. There is NO comparison in the ride, handling, comfort and performance!!!!    Now I love the old straight axle Vette and it is fun to drive but NOT to Far.  With bias tires the Vette jumps all over the road and with the steeringwheel the size of a bus doesn't handle well on curves. Since I bought my first Solstice I've enjoyed them and the great Solstice family.  So the Vette sits in the garage and gets about 300 miles a year, I've had the Vette for 30 years, and I drive the Solstice anytime the weather is clear. Have 18,000 miles on the GXP. They are both great cars!! If you compare to a 53-54 then you have side curtains and the old blue flame straight six.

I have always had people tell me that Corvettes ride rough, but I have oun a 66,87,91 and now a 96, And I have never thought the ride was bad. In fact I think my 96 may ride a little bit better than my Solstice. I just think some people has a too tinder of a bottom.
