I've been getting that error from time to time at work...and it's not like it's just started recently either, it's been doing it for a while.

By the way, since browsers have been mentioned, I use IE8 at work and Firefox (whatever is most recent) at home.  Problems with both.

I have to wait until I get home to check on the status of my new trouble ticket.   If anyone gets the "MySQL server has gone away" error, let me know what you were doing at the time it happened.   URL etc... They told me they couldn't duplicate the error.

Joe, it was still slow off and on today so I did some of the tracert ip address tests as suggested a few days ago.  I am taking 18 hops to get to the site from home.  After doing 10 or 15 tracers it looks like a couple of hop sites are having difficulties.  There is a method to do the tracerts to a text file, which I could send to you if you think it would be useful.  Let me know.

Oddly enough, while my browser was giving me the Waiting business I was able to switch over to the cmd window and do several tracerts before the browser page would load.  That tells me that my request is getting hung up "somewhere" but it's not getting lost.

I also got the MYSQL error the other day - ironically when I was trying to access this thread!  I thought it may have been that they were bumping up the concurrent users and had to take it down momentarily.

Well I just got off the phone and there isn't anything they can do.  It's on a shared server.  They checked the database and said there isn't anything wrong with it.  They said the only option is to go to a vdet (virtual dedicated) server but that costs over $1000 on top of what I'm already paying.  Time to start looking for another provider.

Wow, shared hosting with so much traffic? I didn't thought this forum is on shared account.
Go with a VPS but choose one who is dedicated for this kind of stuff.

Thanks for everything you're trying to do, Joe! It is greatly appreciated!

FWIW, I got the "MySQL Server was gone away"  a couple of minutes ago.  It appears to have returned as otherwise I wouldn't be typing this.

Sorry guys, it's rare instances when the server gets this error.  There isn't anything I can do about it until I find a good provider.  There is plenty of other "shared" providers out there but they problem may exist there also.  The best I can find a VPS is $25 a month.  I need to keep checking.  It wouldn't be so bad if I could get a few other forums to share the same server.  That would then save the money.
