JonyMac's EM Backup Sensor Mod!
« on: April 11, 2010, 09:49:32 PM »
My goal for this mod was to install a backup sensor system that didn't require any holes to be drilled in the rear bumper and works like a stock sensor similar to the one in my wife's LandRover.  It should beep once when reverse is selected and then wait until an object is detected, then beep faster until a continuous tone is heard from 4 feet down to 2 inches.  The unit I installed - Bumper Guard Backup Alarm - VRPS100 - did that perfectly.

Basically you install a mini ECU in the trunk of the car (I did mine on the passenger side because I knew the reverse light wire was there), crimp to the reverse light wire and ground and install an antenna on the inside of the bumper cover.  When reverse is selected, it creates an electromagnetic field that causes the speaker to beep when something disturbs the field.

So I started out trying to use the Parking Dynamics PD1 Backup Sensor that I got from England, but after many irritating hours of troubleshooting, determined that the ECU for the unit was bad - its going back across the pond...  Sooooo, I had seen another very similar backup sensor unit at Walmart for $29 (the VRPS100) and decided to try that - worked like a charm!

Below is the rough steps involved in doing this mod.  I am very happy with the performance of the system and am glad I took the time to do it right.  Removing the rear bumper cover is not easy (hard to reach a couple of screws), takes time and patience, but I took advantage of this mod to straigten out, detail and realign the rear panels - something that has bugged me for some time.

Before:

After:

Remove the lower fascia - there are a number of button clips around the perimeter to pop out and two philips screws to remove that tie into the reverse light.  There are also tow MOFO clips (use your imagination) that hold tabs at either end of the fascia - requires needle nose pliers, a thin screwdriver and patience to remove.  Along the top of the fascia are tabs that snap into holes in the bumper cover - take your time and move slowly to not break any tabs.  There are other threads with more info on fascia removal, so I won't go into more detail here.

Here are all the pieces I removed for both the fascia and the bumper cover.  I had to cut two of the button clips on each side of the wheel wells at the bottom because they were stubborn - will replace them soon.  You need to remove the taillights.  MOFO clips are top center of picture.  All the screws removed were 7mm:

Taillights and mud flaps off the car:

You do not need to jack up the car or remove the rear wheels for this project.  I just removed the button clips at the bottom of the wheel well, the next two screws moving from bottom to top and another button clip above.  I could then get to three 7mm screws holding the bumper cover to the metal fender.  I rigged up an extra long screwdriver for this.  Also this mini ratchet came in VERY helpful (thanks Goat!)

Ass end of car fascia and bumper cover removed - I took the time to detail her rear...

I laid out a double antenna design per the instructions that came with the PD1 - basically the antenna is just stick on metallic tape.  The kit included sticky "mastic" tape that I pressed onto the intersections of the metallic tape to hold it well.  I cleaned the inside of the bumper well and just stuck it down.  The lower horizontal strip fits right inside the part of the bumper that protrudes the farthest from the car below the license plate.  I wrapped it to the sides so i had protection on the rear quarters as well:

Once happy with the antenna design, I sprayed the thing with two coats of undercoating spray to protect it from the elements:

Antenna covered (can you see it?!):

The reverse wire is the dull light green wire on the passenger side of the trunk above the rear wheel well (red clip in this pic is my tap into the reverse wire):

I ran the antenna wire through a rubber grommet that existed on the same corner - the small two strand wire in the foreground:

Taped up with spade connector crimped on - connects to antenna:

ECU (small box at top) mounted above the XM box in trunk on passenger side - the post on the left is where I tapped ground:

I mounted the speaker behind the driver seat  on the back wall under the flap in the trunk.  It is the perfect volume here with the trunk closed - top up or down.  I tried it in a number of different places - this worked best for me:

Here is a youtub vid showing how this thing works - I purposely picked an object (a patio chair) that I couldn't see in my rear view and that had a lot of voids in its structure for the test.  Turn up your speakers and you can hear the initial reverse beep and then the warning beeps as I back up:
YouTube - MOV07265.MPG

This mod, WITH INSTRUCTIONS and a FEW BEERS should take about 4 hours start to finish with detailing while the undercoating dries.  Your results may vary.

Props to my buddy Lil Goat for sitting and pointing and lobbing advice my way as I tore my car apart.  We worked together to track down a bug in the first unit and he kept me enthralled with Drift Racing stories for hours!)

That is sweet as hell!  After reading up on the British unit from one of your links, I decided I wanted it but cheaped out and ordered the Walmart piece.

Now I just need to find the intestinal fortitude to do that to my car!

Thanks G8TR, Sly Bob & GJ!

Reedred - it really isn't technically difficult at all, just a pain to get those two clips off and to reach some of the screws above the wheel wells - other than that, it's very straightforward.  You can do it!

Tazz - here is the link for the backup sensor:
http://roadmasterusa.com/product.php?p=VRPS100

You can get it at Walmart cheap - $24 - $29

Kelu - that was the point sir!  No drilling!  I would love to visit Romania - we may be in Europe in the next two years for an extended vaca with the fam...

It is highly recommended that you purchase a "JonnyMac" for your garage.  I am currently looking at setting up an account with Mac industries so that I can have my very own "JonnyMac" in my garage.  Right now, I am looking at the series 222, but I have heard that the prototype 223 may be just about ready for release to the public, so I may hold out for that one.

JonyMac models 185 and above can usually be bought for a 6 pack of fine ale and a lot of verbal harassing...  Version 222 has a bug, the unit seems to go to sleep between 1 and 5 in the morning.  It's owner states it also has problems taking out the trash and can get stuck in the garage for days on end.  I hear version 223 has the added ability make coffee and waffles on Sundays - so there's that...

I guess I'll attempt installation at SMMM7.  If you're still attending, care to bring your modified screwdriver?  And what fine ale shall I have on hand just in case? :D

I'm thinking this may also put the load on the electrical system that I need for my LED reverse light to not come on with the parking lights.  Hmmm...

Yup, that settles it.  I'm getting the 223.  It seems like Mac engineering is over engineering all future models.  The 223 will remain the best ever.  My order form is on it's way along with payment in full.  4-6 packs of fine ales, along with a modified screwdriver.

Reedred - I *may* be able to make it thurs or fri - I am taking a whole bunch of Cub Scouts camping the 1st and 2nd...  I planned the camping trip around the mod meet date and then Joe went and moved the Mod Meet date...  Booooooooooo!

Also - you may want to add a resistor to the reverse light circuit to add load - not sure what this system pulls in terms of current.  The modified screwdriver was just a cobbled together extension bit from my drill with a 1/4" socket between it and my socket driver and a 7mm socket to remove the screws - I didn't have an extra long socket driver to reach way up above the wheel wells.

GJ - BTW there are other bugs in that model that aren't public... :)

Thanks Joe!

Stupid Question!

So you have to cut the metallic strip to get the double antena design with small metal strips connecting the two larger top & bottom strips?
Do you just lay the smaller cut strips to overlap & touch the top and bottom strips?
Sorry for the ?'s
Thanks

I'm hoping that jonymac is still out there listening.

I bought the same sensor that you did. I however don't think I got as much of the antenna tape as you did. Did you use 2 packages worth? I only paid $11 for mine, so getting another one to do the antenna like yours wouldn't be an issue (I'm thinking this may solve some of the issues the reviews I read complain about). If you did, did you just use the small strips to join them, or did you actually wire both of the strips to the ECU? It appears you just overlapped the antenna tape to make a larger antenna (I did get some smaller ~4" strips with my kit as well, but the instructions are a bit lacking). Any help would be appreciated. I really like this mod :)

I'm thinking of doing it this weekend or next, so if I may just experiment with it. Try it with one package  without covering it with the undercoating and if that doesn't' work, adding another kit to it. Once it's working as desired I can take the bumper back off and spray coat it (Nice touch BTW, the instructions don't mention that, but I like the idea).

I haven't seen Jonymac post for some time, but GJ and I helped Reed install his system on his car at the meet in May.  We just overlapped the tape and nothing more.  You could probably use some of that stainless steel duct tape to supplement the sensor tape in the kit plus it probably has a better adhesive.

Hope that helps.

PS that vampire clip that comes with the kit sucks and didn't work.  After we got everything put together it didn't work, after some trouble shooting we ended up replacing it with a crimped splice.  Do yourself a favor don't waste your time with the vampire clip.
