Rough cold starts
« on: April 29, 2010, 08:19:11 AM »
So, from time to time my car would run really rough on a cold start. Didn't happen too often, and I didn't think much of it. With my tune however, it's doing it all the time, and worse than ever.

Before, I'd just tap of the gas pedal, rev the engine up to about 2-2.5k, and let things warm up to about 70-80 degrees and things would be fine. Although that still works, the engine now continues to run poorly till it's up over 120.

Any ideas what the problem could be? I'm thinking about switching back to the stock tune till this all gets cleared up...

My situation is different but I post here might help.

I generally let the engine warm up, the rpm drops to 850 after reaching about 100F. If I push her until is warmed up to at least to 170F the sound from exhaust is strange not smooth is like struggling.
If I push her after reached 190F than everything is ok. If I drive calm no issues.

If I'm not wrong the ECU have different maps for when the engine is not at proper temperature, I'm thinking this is the reason for my case and I always try to avoid push it while is cold I know this is proper way.

Dunno if this helps you

That helps, but as rough as it's running something isn't right. I'll try and get a video of it when I leave work.

Email Lyndon, he will respond right away (usually) How many miles do you have on the car since the tune?

Hard to say for sure, probably close to/just under 50.

And I did e-mail Lyndon, cell coverage sucks in my building so no telling when I'll get a response.

50 miles is good. My car changed a lot after putting 20 miles on it. You can't check your personal email from a computer at work but you can go on the forum? That sucks

Lyndon's advice: Clean the MAF, if that doesn't work have Joe log a cold start.

So just how quickly can we safely cool and engine off, and how?

It's not a bad idea to do anyway.  I noticed I was having some minor hiccups in idle, so I seafoamed the intake via vac hose.  It cleaned up the idle some, and seemed to improve performance.  However, there was still what was almost like a small miss on idle.  Pulled the MAF, and found I could not see the metal, it was coated in what seemed to be dirt  (I do not have an oiled filter).  Cleaned it with MAF cleaner, and the idle is entirely fixed.

Cool. I wasn't doubting the solution. Just an observation.

Started up just fine after work. Car was 77 degrees, sitting in the sun. Current directive from Lyndon is to drive the car more, he doubts 50 miles was enough.

Couldnt you reset the fuel trims by either pulling 42 / 43 fuse or disconnect the neg batt cable for a few to reset to zero so that the ecm could learn faster from a zero point of reference?  Maybe that will help?
Doesnt the Solstice have a cat warmup stage in the tune could tis be causing any issues?
Im not sure what software lyndon uses to create a tune but if it's just HP tuners could be the locked tables causing issues with the tuned unlocked tables?

Tuning the car is like pulling fuses 42/43, car starts out fresh and starts learning from there.

Should get fairly cool out tonight, we'll see what the car does tomorrow morning.

Started up just fine this morning...ran a tad rough for the first couple seconds but nothing like before-hopefully this really is just a case of the engine needing time to learn.

I hate a slightly rough start yesterday morning, but only once. Hasn't done it since.
