Quick question about induction hood
« on: August 04, 2010, 02:15:15 PM »
Hello All, I haven't posted in a while since my escapade with my car being keyed, but I'm finally taking the time to get it fixed since I got a boatload of cash back from college scholarships. Well the guy painting is an old family friend, who used to do painting and fiberglass, then sold his business and retired. He has to paint and blend part of the hood, and he asked if there was anything I wanted done while he was at it. Well I want a single hood scoop, but functional, which he can do, other than the fact I don't know if it makes a bit of difference that our hood is metal?   Would he have to make a completely new hood from fiberglass? I also wanted to add the heat extractors like on the Weekend club racer Z0K package Pontiac had going around for a while, but again, I don't know if he would have to make a completely new hood. If anyone has experience in how you went around modifying your hood, if you did, or if I should just get a new hood molded.

Thanks much,
Forrest

EDIT: It was the HHR Mirror that had the onstar/phone/autodimming/temp/Home Link.... right?

Hello. Making a one off hood that works and doesnt weigh a ton without having cracks appear later on takes a lot of time, not to mention Money. Have a look at this thread, it might have want you want for a lot less hassle. Thanks Norm http://www.kappaperformance.com/forum/index.php?topic=4989.0

Whether you need to start with a new hood really depends on what final product you are looking for. If you want a seamless molded look to the entire hood, you will pretty much have to start from scratch. If you will be happy with the scoop being a separate piece, it is quite straightforward to add it to the steel hood. In that case you can either look for a pre-molded scoop, or have your body man mold one in composite or form one from aluminum. I have not done it to a Kappa, but in years past have done it quite successfully to other cars with both steel and alloy hoods.

Spicy3480 used to have one. However, his was non-functional and just for aesthetics. Now he has a new hood from Norm's fiberglass.

This is a pic of the old one.

Thanks all for the advice. I was going to have it seamless molded onto the alloy hood. But from what it sounds like I'd be better off going with a one off production. And thanks for the link Norm, trust me, I've viewed most of your products already :) Although if you got that site back up and running again that'd be even better :P

Anyways, he was going to cut rectangular holes in the upper corners for the heat extractors, and put some of the pre-fab vents in, then seamless mold it with fiberglass. And for the hood, do the same, then make a duct on the bottom running back to the airbox. At least, thats what I got from it. Would that work?

What you are describing could work, but will always be at risk of cracking where the glass is bonded to the metal.
