Removing grille (GXP)
« on: June 01, 2010, 11:32:17 PM »
OK - I know that I will sound like the dumb one on this forum but I think this would be the easiest way for me to get this information.

I want to put a couple of LED strips behind my front grille before I go to a car show in August.  It seems that you can't get to the space behind the grille from either under the hood or under the car.  I can't figure out how to take the grille off!!   :gaah:  (OK - cue laughter!)

To pull the grill off, you need to pull sume clips from the back side. I think it might take removing the bumper (that's how I got the clips off, and it was tricky even then...)

Thanks - I guess I won't be putting any LEDs in there.

There's a thread on the forum I believe that tells ya' how to take it off. It only takes about 10 minutes and really isn't difficult at all.

There are 5 screws across the top, 3 in each wheel well and 5 or 6 christmas tree push pins along the bottom edge.
Just trying to do my part...

The grills can be pulled without taking the bumper off.  Randy of DDM did mine, and there may be a thread on the big board.  Joe probably knows how as well, but bottom line is you do not have to pull the bumper, you just need to know where those metal clips are and a screw driver.

Just use a sledge hammer.  It should work quickly and cleanly.

OK - the sledge hammer worked but I only had to do one side.  I could reach around to the other side.  Front end looks a bit odd though.

BlkDragon,

It's supposed to look odd.  It's a show car!  That will make the judges remember you when they go do their voting.  Very unique.  Awaiting the pictures... :)

I blew my coke Coca Cola through my nose all over my keyboard.  Love it.  But I would trim it a bit closer to the body.

:rofl:make me edit my post to protect my job why don't you

Okay Drgn quick and dirty removal

I talked to Randy last night as he took mine out 3 years ago.  You need a flashlight and a long screwdriver.  There are 4 metal clips, two in each grill.  One on the bottom inside edge and one on the top outside edge.  You can find them with the flashlight.

Insert your screwdriver into the grill and under the clip, push hard and break the clip, the metal will fall loose.  Once you have done both you will need to go around the grill and gently release the remaider of the plastic clips and pull it out.   You will destroy the clips with the metal retainer but you do not need them for the grills to stay in place.  Mine have been there without those clips for 3 years and over 30k miles.

Thanks Critterman - it sounds like something I am a little wary of doing myself.  My brother in Vancouver is a mechanic so I might ask him to give me a hand next time I go over.  Any more suggested mods for me?  Your last one is garnering a lot of attention and comments on the street!
