Old wheels, NEW look
« on: June 10, 2010, 07:57:18 PM »
I have finally become completely sick and tired of running Hoosier A6s in the wet, so I bought a set of Toyo R1R's as rains. VERY nice. The plan is to mount them on a spare set of wheels (factory painted Sky wheels that I used with my 295 A6s before I bought OZ's). But I wanted to make them look better. Well, they might look good enough to be my DD wheels.

Before and after. What do you think? Duplicolor has "Wheel Paint" in a few colors and clear. Here are some of the supplies I used.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I think they look better than the chromies (as seen through the painted wheel in the background). I'll post some more "in progress" pics in a day or two as I do the other wheels.

Wow, that looks really good. Might have to consider that instead of gloss black if I ever paint the wheels on my car.

I think these look great!  What is the color?

Also, this got me thinking, anybody got a Solstice with these Sky wheels on it?  I like these wheels... and I like them even better painted that color!

Duplicolor has just a few colors. This is Graphite. http://www.duplicolor.com/products/wheel.html  Here is a Google page showing different people's videos of painting their wheels.

Currently waiting for a 30 minute gas out of the second prime coat on the other three. Slight boo boo on one wheel so I will have to sand and re-prime that area.

Things like:
1) something more specific about the color which might help identify it from local duplicolor sellers, like a product code or something like this
2) how much paint is needed for the 4 wheels
3) what other things are required (sandpaper, coat, etc)
4) a walk through with steps to achieve your result

I love the look of the rims, more I look at the picture more I want them mine like yours

1) http://www.duplicolor.com/products/wheel.html shows the paint colors. I believe I left that link earlier but there it is just in case.
2) 2-3 cans of sandable primer, 2 cans of color, 2 cans of clear.
3) tack cloth, a small rubber or foam sanding block, 3 sheets of 320 grit sandpaper, paper towels, and some sort of paint prep fluid to clean the wheel with, and a roll of 3" painter's tape
4) Google search will provide lots of links to doing the job  http://www.google.com/search?q=duplicolor+wheel+paint&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Interesting note I saw in one video - if you use the gray primer under the Silver paint, the finished look of the silver will be darker than using white primer.

Ya, we've noticed this in the PT Cruiser world. PT's are done with white primer. If someone paints a piece (say a dash panel) and uses a grey primer it'll be way off, no matter which color of topcoat (except maybe black). Gotta use the white primer to match.

Dry.

Any particular reason as opposed to wet sanding?  I would think wet sanding would be better/safer.

Wet sanding is typically used with a very fine (1000 - 3000 grit) sad paper to finish paint. The water is to make sure the fine paper doesn't get loaded.

In this case, you actually want to scuff up the surface to have something for primer/paint to adhere to.

I just notice he said he was using 3000+ sandpaper. IF so, it should have been wet and for finish work. If he was using it to scuff up the surface, I hope that's a typo.

Dry sanding is fine. All that is being done is cleaning off and roughing up the surface to lay down a coat of primer. Didn't take long at all. That said, I plan on wet sanding the clear coat (after it gasses out for a week) for a better. second, clear coat application.

You scuffed with 3000 grit? May as well have used a piece of paper... ;)

OK, that makes sense. I think that's why we were confused about wet/dry sanding.
