Tire Tail for a Sky?
« on: July 11, 2010, 09:19:46 PM »
I've been bitten by the R-comp bug.  I'm going to need to get them to and from events, but I'm a bit weary of going with a big trailer.  Today at an event, I noticed an S2000 with one of these type of carriers...

I think that would be great for what I need.  Has anyone ever used one of these?  Is it as simple as getting a standard hitch then fabbing up a "tail" section?

Not to be off topic but that is a GREAT pic for a name your caption thread LOL.  Looks like something that would be a on drag car to save the back of the car when the front lifts off of the ground LOL...just a lot larger HA HA. Otherwise, it would be a great idea:)

I used something similar to haul 2 wheels, the rest i put on the passenger seat. The two wheels weighed only 100 pounds, but when i went over a bump it felt like it would rip the hitch off, it simply wasn't stabled enough. After that i simply bought a trailer.

Yeah...look how high the nose of that car is sitting...and why did he even bother bringing slicks on a day as damp as that one?

Whenever I get around to upgrading to R-comps I plan on getting a hitch and a trailer. Don't forget you still need to lug around a jack, jack stands, and all the necessary tools.

That pic looks like Qualcom stadium in San Diego.  Also- the car pictured is not an S2000, but I think you knew that and were using that photo as an example...

Seems like a lot of weight on such a small hitch, better mount two on the hood and two on the hitch to balance things out.

I can fit my jack, torque wrench, jack stands, and small toolkit in the trunk.

The reason for this instead of a full-blown trailer is that I have nowhere to stow one.  Now that one in the picture doesn't look too sturdy.  I'd probably go with something more rigid instead.  One of my fellow autocrossers looked at my car this today and said that he could fab up something quite simple that would work just fine for what I need.

And Uranium...I ran my A6s this weekend after a really heavy rain under super-damp conditions...even some 1 inch puddles!!!  I did have to give up just a little bit, but they still stuck pretty well.

That thing is rated at only 200 pounds. The hitches for our cars are rated at well under that. (Looked into Tire Tails when I started racing my Sky in 07.) The trailer solution doesn't mean "big". Mine is a 4X5 and can be stood up against a wall!!! Hitch, box, spare wheel/tire, and all about $400-$450.
