Service Engine DTCs are of two basic types.
1. Type A request a light on the first test fail
2. Type B request a light on the second consecutive test fail

The lamp request is typically canceled after three consecutive passing tests.
The DTC is typically retained in history for 50 warm-up cycles with no test failures, or until a clear DTC request is made by a scan tool.

An ignition cycle does not equal a test or a warm-up. Each diagnostic test requires specific criteria to be met before the test runs. If a test runs it will most often result in a Pass or Fail. Both are reported to the on-board diagnostic manager for use in properly operating the engine.

There are several special cases that require a lot of information that would not really help in this case. This is why really talented and professional technicians are paid well. I wish more people appreciated what they do.

www.IATN.net has tons of good information. Good Luck & Clear Skies
