Larry Casey At Polish Mountain Hillclimb
« on: August 10, 2010, 06:43:14 AM »
Our own beloved forum vendor Larry Casey, co-drove an American Sedan class Fox body Mustang at the Polish Mountain Hillclimb this past weekend.  He took second in AS, but the guy who took first was in a fully prepped Pro Cup engined car with over 200 hp on him.  The hillclimb is in Flintstone MD.  They close a stretch of mountain road, and race anything from  Renault Le Cars to Indy racers up the hill.  It is organized by the same good people who put on the Cumberland Airport autocross series.  The coupe is having clutch and a couple of other minor issues, so I was not ready for this.  OK for autocross, but car and driver need to be in peak trim for this stuff.  I am definitely doing it next year.

It is fairly high risk, because if you go off on a mountainside road. . . well . . . you go over.  Full cages, arm restraints and driving suits, gloves and shoes are required.  There was quite a bit of carnage this year; a 911, a couple of Camaros, and the Le Car.  But Larry kept in on the road, and was just shy of a AS record for the Hill.
Check out his awesome line and aggressive throttle in the clip.  The dude can drive!

Wow, that had to be an exciting minute and a half.  Is there any photos of the carnage?

Well, more like 64 seconds flat (Larry's best time).  Carnage pix abound on the Cumberland Autocross FB page link posted earlier.  Ouch!!

As slow as that engine was revving up can only mean that this is one seriously steep climb. Neat vid clip.

That was the road you had to drive before you had 68, it is a great road, a little scary when you had a big truck coming down the mountain behind you :)

Larry is a great driver, he is quick and in full control
